Chapter 3 – The Basement Secret

The footsteps disappeared after several minutes.

Neither of us moved.

Finally, I whispered, "Stay behind me."

We searched every room, checking every window.

Each one had been screwed shut from the outside.

Every exit had been planned.

Ryan hadn't simply left.

He had prepared this.

As I searched the garage for tools, I noticed something strange.

The basement door was slightly open.

Ryan never left it open.

Inside, the air smelled like fresh paint.

Boxes had been moved.

Behind an old workbench, I noticed a loose section of drywall.

Curious, I pushed against it.

The panel swung inward.

Hidden behind it was a small steel safe.

It wasn't locked.

Inside were stacks of cash.

Three fake passports.

A handgun.

And dozens of documents.

Different names.

Different addresses.

Different bank accounts.

My hands trembled as I flipped through the files.

Ryan wasn't a businessman.

He had been laundering money for years.

Near the bottom was a red folder labeled:

INSURANCE CLAIM

My name.

Sophie's name.

Life insurance policies totaling nearly five million dollars.

Beneficiary:

Ryan Mitchell.

Then I found the final page.

A typed timeline.

9:00 PM — Electrical fire begins.

9:15 PM — Structure fully involved.

9:30 PM — Family presumed deceased.
