Chapter 12 - Melissa's Truth

Melissa came to my house that night alone.

No makeup.

No designer coat.

No Ryan.

She looked exhausted.

“I left him.”

I did not invite her inside immediately.

“Why?”

“Because he lied.”

“About what?”

“Everything.”

Ryan had told her the development project was temporarily illiquid.

In reality, he had been shifting money between companies for months.

Some investors had already demanded repayment.

He had also told Melissa that I had privately promised to help after the settlement.

“I never promised anything.”

“I know that now.”

She began crying.

I remained still.

Six months earlier, I would have hugged her automatically.

Grief had changed my reflexes.

“What do you want from me?”

“Nothing.”

I waited.

She swallowed.

“I know you don’t believe that.”

“I don’t.”

“I deserve that.”

That was new.

Melissa looked toward the porch floor.

“There’s something else you should know.”

She told me the birthday dinner had not merely been dinner.

Ryan had planned to announce their engagement that night.

My parents knew.

Two investors from his company were also invited.

Canceling would have embarrassed him professionally.

“So three funerals threatened Ryan’s networking event.”

Her face crumpled.

“When you say it that way—”

“How else should I say it?”

She had no answer.

Then she confessed something I had not expected.

After my call, Dad had wanted to cancel everything.

Mom had hesitated.

Ryan became furious.

Melissa cried.

She told Dad that if he left, he would prove I had always mattered more.

Dad stayed.

Mom stayed.

And Ryan made his announcement between the appetizers and birthday cake.

While I was selecting three coffins.

“I was jealous of you,” Melissa whispered.

I almost could not process it.

“Jealous?”

“You had Ethan.”

“You had this marriage everyone believed in.”

“Your kids adored you.”

“You never needed Mom and Dad the way I did.”

I stared at her.

“My children are dead, Melissa.”

“I know.”

“You were jealous of a life that no longer exists.”

“I know.”

Her voice shattered.

“That’s why I hate myself.”

For the first time, I believed her tears.

But remorse was not repair.

“I can believe you’re sorry and still not trust you.”

She nodded.

“I understand.”

Before leaving, she gave me a USB drive.

“What is this?”

“Ryan’s files.”

“He left his laptop unlocked.”

“I copied everything with your name in it.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

She opened the door.

“Because for once, I want to choose the right sister.”

After she left, I called Rachel.

The USB contained eighty-three files.

One of them was titled CLAIRE ACCESS PLAN.
