The courtroom was filled to capacity long before the judge took the bench.
Reporters filled every seat reserved for the press.
Court artists sharpened their pencils.
The jury watched quietly as Sophia Bennett walked toward the witness stand.
She looked different than she had the night Lucas came home.
The bruises had faded.
The swelling was gone.
But the memories remained.
She raised her right hand and took the oath.
Then she sat down.
Assistant District Attorney Rebecca Hayes approached gently.
"Mrs. Bennett, how long have you been married to Captain Lucas Bennett?"
"Four years."
"And before his deployment?"
Sophia smiled faintly.
"We were happy."
She glanced toward Lucas.
"He made our house feel like a home."
Hayes nodded.
"What happened after he left?"
The smile disappeared.
"It changed the next morning."
She described how Eleanor demanded every house key.
How her phone was confiscated.
How every call to Lucas was monitored.
How she was told she had no authority inside the home.
Then came the physical abuse.

"Can you tell the jury what happened that day?"
Sophia looked at the picture.
"I asked if I could take Leo to his pediatric appointment."
"What happened?"
"Eleanor said I was wasting money."
"And when you insisted?"
Sophia swallowed hard.
"She pushed me into the kitchen counter."
Hayes showed another photograph.
The bruise matched exactly.
Next came the recovered text messages.
One by one, Hayes read them aloud.
Lucas... Leo smiled today. I wish you were here.
They took my phone again.
I'm scared.
Please come home.
Sophia lowered her eyes.
"I thought he didn't love me anymore."
Lucas looked down.
He couldn't hide the pain on his face.
The prosecutor asked one final question.
"Mrs. Bennett..."
"Why didn't you leave?"
The defense had been waiting for this.
Sophia answered without hesitation.
"They took my identification."
"My money."
"My phone."
"They threatened to tell everyone I abandoned my baby."
She looked directly at the jury.
"And every time I tried to leave..."
"They reminded me they knew exactly where Lucas was deployed."
The room grew still.
"They said if I caused trouble..."
"...my husband would pay for it."
The defense attorney stood for cross-examination.
He smiled politely.
"Mrs. Bennett, isn't it true Eleanor often helped care for Leo?"
"No."
"She bought diapers."
"With Lucas's money."
"She allowed you to stay in the home."
"It was Lucas's home."
The attorney shifted tactics.
"You never called the police."
"I couldn't."
"You never escaped."
"I tried."
"You have no witness to those attempts."
Sophia looked calmly toward Detective Collins.
"Actually..."
"I do."
The prosecutor smiled slightly.
Hayes approached the evidence cart.
She removed the digital recorder recovered from the storage unit.
"This recording has already been admitted into evidence."
The audio filled the courtroom.
Sophia's voice trembled.
"Please... let me call my husband."
Eleanor answered.
"You'll speak to him when I decide."
Then came the unmistakable sound of a slap.
A baby began crying.
The recording ended.
The defense attorney quietly returned to his seat.
He had no further questions.
As Sophia stepped down from the witness stand, every juror watched her walk back to Lucas.
He stood before she reached him.
Without saying a word, he wrapped his arms around her.
