Chapter 2: My Father's Last Gift

The conference room smelled of old books and polished wood.

Only four people sat inside.

Robert.

My mother.

Me.

And Jason.

I hadn't invited him.

He had insisted on coming.

"I should be here to support you," he'd said.

Funny.

He hadn't supported me when my own mother slapped me.

Robert opened the final will.

"Richard Brooks prepared several versions throughout his life."

He smiled sadly.

"But this last version was completed just eleven days before his death."

He began reading.

To my beloved daughter Hannah...

If you're hearing this, I wasn't strong enough to beat cancer.

My chest tightened.

You always believed people should be judged by what they do when nobody is watching.

So did I.

That's why I watched everyone.

Robert handed me another folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank records.

Emails.

Private investigator reports.

My father hadn't just written a will.

He had uncovered the truth about everyone around him.

Including Jason.

I looked at Robert.

"What is this?"

He hesitated.

"Mr. Brooks asked me to show you only if Jason remained in your life."

Jason frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Robert placed several photographs on the table.

Jason.

Holding hands with another woman.

Entering luxury hotels.

Buying engagement rings.

Not one.

Three.

Different women.

Different dates.

My stomach turned.

Jason jumped to his feet.

"Those don't prove anything."

Robert calmly replied,

"The woman in the photographs has already provided a sworn statement."

Jason's face lost all color.

"You've been maintaining relationships with multiple women while planning to marry Hannah."

Silence.

Then Robert added the sentence that destroyed Jason completely.

"You also accepted fifty thousand dollars from Chloe."

I looked at Jason.

"For what?"

His lips parted.

Nothing came out.

Robert answered instead.

"To convince Hannah not to challenge the inheritance."

Everything inside me went cold.

The man I had planned to spend my life with...

Had sold me.

For fifty thousand dollars.

I quietly removed the engagement ring.

Placed it on the table.

"It's over."

Jason reached toward me.

"Hannah..."

"No."

One word.

That was all he deserved.

Security escorted him out.

The room became silent again.

Robert smiled gently.

"Your father left one more surprise."

He handed me a small brass key.

"Storage Unit 114."

"He said you'll know what to do."

I didn't.

Not yet.

May you like

But two days later...

That tiny key would open a door that changed my future forever.
