Chapter 2 – Hidden Behind Smiles

The emergency room was unusually quiet.

Doctors examined Ava while Ethan waited outside, replaying every moment of the past year.

The unexplained dizziness.

The constant exhaustion.

The sudden memory lapses.

Each time, Margaret had insisted they were normal side effects of trauma after the accident.

Ethan had believed her.

Now he hated himself for it.

The examining physician finally stepped into the hallway.

"Mr. Harrington?"

He stood immediately.

"Is she alright?"

"She's stable."

Relief lasted only a second.

"But we're concerned."

The doctor lowered his voice.

"Blood tests indicate long-term exposure to sedative medication."

Ethan stared at him.

"Long-term?"

"Possibly several months."

The words struck harder than any punch.

Someone hadn't tried to control Ava for one afternoon.

Someone had been slowly weakening her.

Back at the mansion, police officers photographed every room in Margaret's private office.

Detective Rachel Morgan supervised the search personally.

One officer called out.

"Detective!"

He held up a locked metal box recovered from the bookshelf.

Margaret folded her arms.

"Private documents."

Rachel smiled faintly.

"We'll see."

Minutes later, a locksmith opened it.

Inside were dozens of neatly organized folders.

Medical prescriptions.

Bank statements.

Property transfers.

Insurance paperwork.

Everything centered around Ava.

Rachel opened the final folder.

Her expression changed.

There was a typed timeline.

Every doctor's appointment.

Every medication adjustment.

Every legal meeting.

Each entry included handwritten notes.

"Increase dosage if memory improves."

"Delay signature until she becomes fully dependent."

Rachel slowly closed the folder.

"This wasn't impulsive."

She looked toward the doorway where Margaret sat under police supervision.

"This was planned."
