CHAPTER 2: THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The silence in the mansion didn’t last long.
Amelia was rushed into the hospital before I could even process what had happened.
Machines.
White lights.
Cold hallways.
And her hand barely holding mine.
Her breathing was shallow, but she was alive.
That was the only thing keeping me from breaking completely.
Behind me, Eleanor arrived at the hospital with the same calm expression.
As if nothing had happened.
As if my wife wasn’t fighting for two lives in that room.
“I told you,” she said quietly.
“She doesn’t belong here.”
I turned slowly.
Something inside me snapped—but my voice stayed calm.
Too calm.
“Mom,” I said, “you made a mistake.”
She almost laughed.
“I made a decision.”
That’s when my phone rang.
One call.
Unknown number.
I answered.
A deep voice came through.
“Mr. Whitfield… this is Governor Daniels’ office.”
I froze.
Then the next words hit harder.
“His daughter was admitted to your hospital this evening.”
I looked through the glass window.
At Amelia.
And suddenly everything made sense.
May you like
Eleanor hadn’t just attacked my wife.
She had attacked the most protected family in the state.
