Chapter 14 - THE SIGNATURE

I knew the signature was not mine.

But proving that became harder than saying it.

The document carried my handwriting.

My loops.

My slant.

Even the strange way I crossed the second letter in my last name.

Margaret had not simply copied my signature.

She had practiced it.

Or someone had.

Martin brought in an independent forensic examiner named Sarah Lin.

She studied the original under magnification.

“This was written by someone who knows your signature extremely well.”

“Margaret.”

“Possibly.”

Sarah pointed to tiny hesitations in the ink.

“But there’s something else.”

“What?”

“The signature was written over a faint indentation.”

She angled the page beneath a light.

A different signature had once been traced underneath.

James leaned closer.

“Whose?”

Sarah needed several hours.

The hearing began before she finished.

Margaret entered the courthouse wearing a gray suit and a small bandage near her temple.

She looked fragile.

That was deliberate.

Reporters waited outside.

Someone had leaked everything.

Headlines called it THE WHITMORE BABY SCANDAL.

The judge ordered Lily kept away from the courthouse.

Thank God.

Margaret’s attorney argued first.

He portrayed me as unstable.

Violent.

Possessive.

He showed photographs of Margaret’s red cheek.

Then he showed my signature on the embryo consent.

My attorney responded with ballroom footage.

The courtroom watched Margaret grab Lily.

Pull her.

Shove her.

I heard several people gasp.

Margaret stared straight ahead.

Then Noah’s recording played.

Her voice filled the courtroom.

Tonight was the last time Mrs. James Whitmore would ever be allowed to call Lily her daughter.

The judge’s expression changed.

Margaret’s attorney recovered quickly.

He argued the statement referred to legal parentage.

Then he produced the genetic report.

Margaret was Lily’s biological mother.

Charles Whitmore was a 99.99 percent paternal match.

The truth became official.

Lily was genetically their daughter.

Then Margaret’s attorney asked for temporary guardianship pending investigation.

The judge looked disgusted.

But law and disgust are not the same thing.

She began asking questions.

Had I known about the donor embryo?

No.

Could I prove I had not signed the consent?

Not yet.

Had James signed a substitution authorization?

Yes.

That hurt us.

Then the courtroom doors opened.

Sarah Lin entered carrying a folder.

My lawyer requested five minutes.

The judge allowed it.

Sarah whispered to us.

I watched James’s expression change.

Then mine did.

The hidden signature beneath mine belonged to someone else.

Margaret had not created the document from nothing.

She had taken an existing consent and altered it.

Sarah handed me the enhanced image.

The original signature remained faintly visible beneath mine.

I recognized it.

James recognized it too.

It belonged to Claire Marsh.

And the document was dated one year before Lily’s birth.

Margaret had reused the paperwork from Evan’s illegal embryo transfer.

But that was not the biggest discovery.

At the bottom of Claire’s original form was a witness signature.

DR. ARTHUR REEVES.

And beside it was another name.

CHARLES WHITMORE.

The courtroom went silent.

May you like

Charles had signed the original transfer.

Meaning he had known about Evan.
