Chapter 7 - THE INTERNET LIE
Ellie’s video spread quickly.
Thousands of people watched it before midnight.
Some defended me after noticing Dustin in the corner.
Others believed Ellie’s version.
Nathan shared the post without commenting.
Margaret’s friends wrote that she had spent her life helping children.
No one mentioned that the only child she helped was the one she considered biologically acceptable.
Rebecca told me not to respond.
“Public arguments help no one.”
“She is destroying my reputation.”
“She is trying to provoke you into making emotional statements.”
“Then what do I do?”
“Preserve everything.”
“Let the facts move slower than the lie.”
The next morning, my employer called.
I worked as a financial compliance manager for a regional hospital network.
My supervisor, Daniel Price, had seen the video.
He asked whether I wanted personal leave.
I expected suspicion.
Instead, he said something I did not expect.
“My sister survived a family like this.”
“Take whatever time you need.”
He also told me the hospital’s security department had identified several threatening messages.
They would protect my personal information and escort me if I returned to the office.
Not everyone believed Ellie.
That mattered.
A woman named Teresa Hall contacted me through Rebecca.
She lived beside Ellie’s house.
Two months earlier, Margaret and Ellie had discussed Dustin while sitting outside.
Teresa’s doorbell camera recorded the conversation.
In the video, Ellie complained that Dustin received birthday money from my father.
Margaret responded.
“The boy will not be around once Nathan gets the house.”
Ellie laughed.
“What are you going to do, starve him out?”
Margaret smiled.
“If that is what it takes.”
Teresa did not understand the conversation at the time.
After seeing Ellie’s online post, she contacted police.
The video changed the investigation.
The cruelty had been planned.
It was not spontaneous discipline.
They wanted Dustin to feel unwanted enough to ask me to leave with him.
If we left voluntarily, Nathan could remain in the house and pressure me to refinance or sell.
The missing money from our joint account was also traced.
Nathan transferred it to a business account belonging to Ellie.
Ellie moved twelve thousand dollars to Margaret.
Another ten thousand paid Nathan’s gambling debts.
The remaining money covered the down payment on a new vehicle for Ellie.
The fried chicken Dustin watched Mason eat had been purchased with my money.
The phone Ellie used to record his humiliation had been purchased with my money.
Even the attorney Nathan hired was initially paid from money taken from our account.
Rebecca obtained an emergency order freezing the remaining funds.
Nathan became furious.
He sent twenty-three messages in less than an hour.
You are stealing from me.
You are destroying my family.
You will regret humiliating my mother.
The final message was different.
Check Dustin’s backpack before you defend him again.
I immediately called the police.
An officer met us outside Dustin’s school.
The principal brought his backpack to the office.
Inside the front pocket was Margaret’s gold bracelet.
Dustin had never seen it before.
Ellie had reported the bracelet stolen that morning.
She claimed Dustin took it during the confrontation.
The plan was obvious.
They wanted to prove he was a thief.
But the school’s security cameras showed someone approaching Dustin’s classroom before classes began.

He entered carrying Dustin’s backpack.
