Chapter 2 – The Lie That Kept Him Away

The bouquet hit the floor.

White lilies scattered across the spotless kitchen tiles like tiny surrender flags.

For a heartbeat—

No one moved.

Then Daniel crossed the room in three long strides and dropped to his knees beside Emily.

His polished military uniform didn't matter anymore.

Neither did the medals.

He cupped her bruised face with shaking hands.

"Emily..."

His voice cracked.

"I came home the second they approved my leave."

Her swollen eyes searched his face as if she feared he wasn't real.

"They said..." she whispered, struggling to breathe through tears. "They said you stopped writing."

Daniel froze.

"What?"

"They burned every letter."

His head slowly turned toward his mother.

Margaret hadn't moved.

She simply folded another freshly ironed shirt with impossible precision.

"You were deployed," she said calmly.

"I handled things."

Daniel stood.

Slowly.

Dangerously.

"What did you just say?"

Margaret finally looked at him.

"I protected your future."

Emily tried to pull herself upright.

"There were letters every week," she sobbed.

"I wrote every Sunday."

"I waited every day."

"I never got one."

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

"I wrote too."

"I sent photographs."

"I even mailed the ultrasound picture you asked for."

Emily stared.

"I never received anything..."

Silence.

Then Daniel noticed something.

Near the trash cabinet...

Tiny black flakes.

Burned paper.

He walked over.

Bent down.

Picked up a half-charred envelope.

His own handwriting.

Emily Carter.

The edges were burned, but three words survived.

"...I love both..."

His knees nearly gave out.

Margaret spoke before either of them could.

"I did what any mother would do."

"You had a military career."

"You couldn't come home to a pregnant waitress."

"You deserved someone better."

Daniel looked at her...

Not like a son.

Like an officer confronting a criminal.

"You destroyed my family."

Margaret's expression finally shifted.

Only slightly.

"You'll thank me one day."

Instead...

Daniel reached into his pocket.

Pulled out his military phone.

Pressed one number.

Speaker mode.

A calm female voice answered immediately.

"Military Legal Assistance."

Daniel never took his eyes off his mother.

"I need to report fraud involving intercepted military correspondence..."

"...and possible domestic assault."

Margaret's confident smile disappeared.

But before anyone could say another word—

Someone pounded violently on the front door.

Three heavy knocks.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

Then a man's voice echoed through the house.

"Mrs. Margaret Collins!"

"We have a court order!"

Daniel looked toward the door.

Emily grabbed his sleeve.

May you like

Her face turned completely white.

"They found me..."
