Chapter 2 – The Phone Call That Changed Everything

The ballroom remained frozen.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Even the violinists had stopped playing.

David lowered his hand slowly, as if only now realizing what he had done.

My cheek burned, but I didn't touch it.

Instead, I held Mia tighter.

She buried her face against my waist, trembling so violently I could barely keep my own emotions under control.

I unlocked my phone.

One name sat at the top of my favorites list.

"Dad."

I pressed Call.

Margaret laughed loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"Oh, please. Are you calling someone to come rescue you? Maybe another sob story?"

I ignored her.

The line connected after a single ring.

"Emily?"

My father's deep voice carried through the phone.

He immediately sensed something was wrong.

"Dad..."

I looked down at Mia's tear-stained face.

"They hurt Mia."

Silence.

Then his voice became dangerously calm.

"Who?"

"My mother-in-law shoved her to the floor in front of everyone."

Another pause.

"And David slapped me."

I heard a chair scrape across marble on the other end.

"Stay exactly where you are."

The line disconnected.

Margaret crossed her arms.

"Your daddy isn't going to scare me."

She didn't know.

Almost no one did.

For eight years, I had hidden where I came from.

When I met David, he believed I was a middle-class schoolteacher who had inherited nothing after my mother's death.

That was only half the truth.

After Mom died, I walked away from my family's fortune.

I wanted someone to love me—not my last name.

So I became Emily Carter instead of Emily Harrison.

Only my father knew.

And today...

That secret was over.

Twenty minutes later, the ballroom doors opened.

Nearly a dozen men in tailored black suits entered first.

Behind them walked my father.

Richard Harrison.

The billionaire founder of Harrison Global Holdings.

Every television station in the country knew his face.

So did every bank.

Every politician.

Every CEO.

Gasps swept across the room.

One guest whispered,

"That's Richard Harrison..."

Another nearly dropped her champagne.

"My God... Emily is his daughter?"

David slowly turned toward me.

His face drained of every ounce of color.

"No..."

Margaret frowned.

"Who is this?"

My father ignored everyone else.

He walked directly toward Mia.

Without saying a word, he knelt beside his granddaughter.

His expensive suit touched the gravy-covered floor.

He gently brushed mashed potatoes from Mia's hair.

"Sweetheart," he whispered.

"Did someone hurt you?"

Mia nodded through fresh tears.

Grandpa wrapped her carefully in his arms.

When he stood again, every trace of warmth disappeared from his face.

He looked directly at David.

"You struck my daughter."

David swallowed.

"It... it wasn't like—"

Richard raised one finger.

"Don't."

The ballroom had never been so quiet.

"You've got exactly one chance to tell the truth."

David opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

My father turned toward Margaret.

"And you assaulted an eight-year-old child."

Margaret scoffed.

"It was discipline."

"No."

Richard replied.

"It was abuse."

Then he looked toward his attorney.

"Call Child Protective Services, the police, and our legal department."

Margaret's smile vanished.
