CHAPTER 3 — THE PHONE CALL THAT REVEALED THEIR PLAN

Five days passed.
Five peaceful days.
At least, that’s what I thought.
Willa started laughing again.
She brought Lily everywhere.
She slept better.
She stopped asking if the police were coming back.
That alone made every decision worth it.
But my family was silent.
Too silent.
And silence from people like my mother was never peace.
It was preparation.
One evening, while I was cooking dinner, my phone accidentally connected to my car’s Bluetooth.
A call came through.
Unknown number.
I almost ignored it.
Then I heard a voice.
My mother.
I froze.
The call had been answered automatically.
But they didn’t know I was listening.
“You’re sure she won’t fight it?”
It was Jenna.
My hand stopped moving.
My mother whispered.
“She always backs down.”
My stomach tightened.
“After everything we’ve done for her, she feels guilty.”
Jenna laughed.
“What about the money?”
My mother lowered her voice.
“She’ll come crawling back.”
I slowly grabbed my phone.
Recording.
Still active.
Then I heard the sentence that made my blood run cold.
“We just need to make everyone believe she’s unstable.”
Silence.
Then Jenna asked:
“And Willa?”
My mother answered immediately.
“She’s the weakness.”
I stopped breathing.
“She’ll do anything for that child.”
The call continued.
But I already understood.
This wasn’t about the doll.
It never was.
The 911 call wasn’t a lesson.
It was a test.
They wanted to see how far they could push me.
They wanted control.
And now they were planning something bigger.
I quietly ended the call.
Then I saved the recording.
Because for the first time…
I wasn’t afraid of losing my family.
They were about to discover what happened when I stopped protecting them.
May you like
And the next thing they tried to do…
would expose everything.
