Chapter 15 - The Empty Coffin

We obtained a court order to exhume Dad’s body.
Mom fought it through her attorney.
She claimed disturbing his grave would traumatize Daniel.
For once, no one allowed her to use my brother as a shield.
The cemetery workers lifted the coffin beneath a gray morning sky.
I held Daniel’s hand.
He wore noise-canceling headphones and watched every movement.
When the medical examiner opened the coffin, she did not find our father.
Inside were sealed bags of sand.
The total weight matched Dad’s recorded burial weight.
The funeral home director was arrested within hours.
He admitted Elias had paid him to alter the coffin before the service.
He claimed he never saw Dad’s body.
The hospital release paperwork transferred the remains to a private transport service owned by Northbridge Family Services.
Elias’s shell company.
Dad’s death certificate was real.
His toxicology report was real.
But his body had vanished.
Mom requested another interview.
This time, she did not ask for immunity.
She looked exhausted.
“Richard died in my arms.”
“Then where is his body?”
“Elias took it.”
“Why?”
“He said there were traces that could not survive a second examination.”
“Did Dad ever wake up after the hospital declared him dead?”
Mom looked toward the observation window.
“I don’t know.”
“You saw the train-station picture.”
“Yes.”
“Was it Dad?”
“I thought it was.”
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
“Because Elias said Richard had planned everything.”
“He said your father wanted us to believe he was dead so he could destroy us safely.”
“Did you believe him?”
“I was afraid to find out.”
Daniel typed.
“Did Dad speak?”
Mom’s face collapsed when she heard his digital voice.
“At the hospital?”
Daniel nodded.
She closed her eyes.
“After the monitor stopped, Elias asked me to leave the room.”
“I stood outside.”
“I heard something fall.”
“Then I heard your father say your name.”
Daniel stopped breathing for several seconds.
“You left.”
It was not a question.
Mom began crying.
“Elias said it was a reflex.”
“You left,” Daniel repeated.
“Yes.”
The confession broke something inside me.
Dad might have been alive.
Mom heard him.
She chose not to open the door.
Detective Torres entered the room with new information.
Police had found Samuel’s car near an abandoned medical clinic.
Inside the trunk was Dad’s old wallet.

There was also a recently used inhaler containing Richard Hale’s DNA.
Someone with Dad’s DNA had used it within the past week.
