Chapter 8 - THE VAULT

The vault was beneath an old bank building Julian secretly owned in the Loop.
Maya had walked past the building dozens of times without knowing Julian controlled it.
That realization was becoming common.
She was beginning to suspect Julian owned half the places in Chicago that looked abandoned.
They entered through a service tunnel before sunrise.
Three armed guards followed.
Maya glanced at them.
“Does everything in your life require weapons?”
Julian looked at her.
“Most things worth protecting.”
She sighed.
“That answer was extremely Julian.”
“I assume that is negative.”
“Usually.”
The underground corridor ended at a steel door.
Derek entered a code.
Another door opened.
Then another.
Maya stared.
“This is ridiculous.”
“My father was cautious.”
“Your father built a bunker.”
“Yes.”
“You say that like those are the same thing.”
Julian stopped at a circular vault door.
A digital keypad sat beside it.
“I’ve tried every number Adrian used.”
Maya held Daniel’s letter.
“And this one?”
“Never.”
She handed it to Julian.
He entered the sequence.
The keypad flashed green.
Everyone went still.
A second prompt appeared.
SECOND KEY REQUIRED.
Julian’s expression hardened.
“I knew it.”
Maya frowned.
“What second key?”
“My father designed the vault for two people.”
“Who?”
“Himself.”
“And?”
“My mother.”
Julian stared at the keypad.
“She died with him.”
Maya examined Daniel’s letter again.
“There’s nothing else.”
Derek leaned against the wall.
“Could Daniel have had her key?”
“No.”
Julian walked around the vault.
“My mother’s code was supposedly a sentence.”
“A sentence?”
“A phrase she would remember.”
Maya looked at him.
“What phrase?”
“No idea.”
“Something about you?”
Julian shook his head.
“My parents kept business away from me until I was older.”
Maya looked at the door.
“What was your mother’s name?”
“Catherine.”
“What did she care about?”
Julian’s expression softened.
“Music.”
“What kind?”
“Piano.”
“Favorite song?”
“I don’t know.”
Maya stared at him.
“You really don’t know?”
“I was twenty.”
“That is old enough to know your mother’s favorite song.”
Julian’s eyes darkened.
“I thought I had more time.”
Maya immediately regretted it.
“I’m sorry.”
He nodded.
Derek quietly examined Daniel’s letter.
“What if the second key isn’t Julian’s mother’s code?”
Julian looked at him.
“What?”
“Daniel wrote this for Rosa.”
“Yes.”
“What did Daniel know that Rosa would know?”
Maya’s eyes widened.
“My parents had a song.”
Julian turned.
“What?”
Maya looked at Rosa, who had insisted on coming.
Rosa had been silent until now.
She stared at the vault.
“Daniel used to play it when Maya couldn’t sleep.”
Maya’s throat tightened.
“You never told me that.”
Rosa smiled sadly.
“You were too young to remember.”
“What song?”
“Blue Moon.”
Derek stared at the keypad.
“Letters?”
Julian tried BLUE MOON.
Red.
Maya frowned.
“Maybe the date.”
“What date?”
“My parents’ wedding.”
Rosa gave it.
Julian entered the numbers.
Red.
Rosa closed her eyes.
“There was a phrase.”
Everyone looked at her.
“What phrase?”
Rosa hesitated.
“Daniel used to say it whenever he left for dangerous work.”
Maya felt cold.
“What?”
Rosa whispered.
“Home before morning.”
Julian entered HOME BEFORE MORNING.
Green.
The vault bolts began moving.
Maya stared.
The door opened.
Inside was a room untouched for fifteen years.
Shelves held cash.
Jewelry.
Documents.
Old hard drives.
Julian ignored all of it.
A desk stood in the center.
On it sat a leather-bound ledger.
Maya slowly approached.
“Is that it?”
Julian opened it.
His father’s handwriting filled the pages.
Names.
Payments.
Contracts.
Politicians.
Police officials.
Judges.
Union leaders.
Maya felt sick.
“This could destroy hundreds of people.”
“Yes.”
Derek flipped through the pages.
“Maybe thousands.”
Julian searched for Gabriel.
Nothing.
Then Maya noticed a folded section near the back.
“Here.”
Julian opened it.
A photograph fell onto the table.
Three men stood outside a warehouse.
Adrian Croft.
Gabriel Croft.
Daniel Torres.
Behind them stood a fourth man.
Maya did not recognize him.
Julian did.
“Vincent Vale.”
Maya stared.
“They all knew each other.”
“Yes.”
Derek read the note beneath the photograph.
Operation Black Harbor.
Maya frowned.
“What was that?”
Julian’s face changed.
“I’ve never heard of it.”
Derek searched the ledger.
Several pages had been removed.
“Someone tore them out.”
Maya looked at Julian.
“Your father?”
“Maybe.”
Rosa stepped closer.
“Daniel mentioned a harbor once.”
Everyone turned.
“When?”
“Before the crash.”
“What did he say?”
“He told me he had found proof that the Crofts and Vale were moving more than money.”
Julian frowned.
“What?”
“I asked if it was drugs.”
Rosa shook her head.
“He said worse.”
Maya’s stomach tightened.
“What is worse?”
Rosa looked at her daughter.
“People.”
Silence.
Julian’s face turned to stone.
“Human trafficking.”
Rosa nodded.
“Daniel believed someone was using shipping routes to move women and children.”
Maya covered her mouth.
“Was your father involved?”
She regretted asking the moment she saw Julian’s expression.
“I don’t know.”
Derek looked through the ledger.
“If Adrian discovered Gabriel was involved, that explains the split.”
Julian nodded slowly.
“My father abruptly shut down three port operations the year before Daniel supposedly died.”
“Maybe he was trying to stop it.”
“Or hide it.”
Maya stepped beside Julian.
He looked at her.
“I need the truth too.”
His voice was quiet.
“I know.”
Derek found an envelope taped beneath the desk.
“Julian.”
The handwriting was Adrian’s.
TO MY SON.
Julian froze.
He did not touch it.
Maya waited.
Finally Julian opened the letter.
Julian,
If you are reading this, either I failed or Daniel succeeded.
Gabriel is alive.
Trust no story you were told about his death.
I made mistakes that cannot be undone, but Black Harbor was not one of them.
I tried to stop it.
Gabriel and Vale built it together.
Daniel found the evidence.
I helped him disappear.
Julian stopped reading.
Maya stared.
“Your father helped my father survive.”
Julian nodded weakly.
He continued.
Daniel believed he could destroy Gabriel by staying hidden.
I believed I could protect my family by pretending Gabriel was dead.
We were both wrong.
Gabriel will come for you when he believes you have something worth losing.
Do not fight him the way I did.
He wants war because war creates fear.
Use the truth.
There is one copy of the Black Harbor records.
Daniel has it.
If he is alive, find him.
If he is dead, find his daughter.
Julian stopped.
Maya stared.
“My name?”
He continued reading.
Daniel built a failsafe around Maya before she was born.
Only she can open the archive.
She will not know this.
Do not tell her unless Gabriel returns.
Because if Gabriel learns she is the key, he will never stop hunting her.
The room went silent.
Maya looked at her mother.
Rosa was crying.
“You knew?”
“No.”
Maya looked at Julian.
“What does it mean that I’m the key?”
“I don’t know.”
She laughed bitterly.
“There’s that answer again.”
Derek searched the vault.
“Maybe biometric encryption.”
“Twenty-three years ago?”
“Could be something simpler.”
Maya looked at the letter.
“Daniel built it before I was born.”
Rosa slowly shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
Rosa stared at the date on Adrian’s letter.
“This was written fifteen years ago.”
“Yes.”
“Daniel couldn’t have built something around Maya before she was born.”
Maya frowned.
“You just said—”
“No.”
Rosa looked terrified.
“Daniel did not know me before Maya was born.”
Everyone went still.
Julian reread the sentence.
Daniel built a failsafe around Maya before she was born.
Maya whispered.
“That’s impossible.”
Derek’s expression changed.
“Unless Daniel wasn’t the one who built it.”
Julian looked back at the ledger.
A hidden compartment was built into the rear cover.
He opened it.
Inside was a birth certificate.
Maya Torres.
Date of birth correct.
Mother: Rosa Elena Torres.
Father:
Not Daniel Torres.
Maya stopped breathing.
Julian stared at the name.
So did Rosa.
Rosa whispered.
“No.”
Maya’s hands began trembling.
“Mom?”
Rosa shook her head violently.
“No.”
Maya took the certificate.
Her biological father’s name was printed clearly.
GABRIEL ADRIAN CROFT.
Julian looked at Maya.
Maya looked at him.
Neither spoke.
Because if the document was real, Gabriel Croft was not merely using Maya to destroy Julian.
May you like
He was Maya’s father.
And Maya and Julian were cousins.
