Chapter 1 - EIGHT MINUTES

The first person through the penthouse door was not my father.
It was Arthur Henderson.
He had served as head of security for Sterling Capital since I was twelve years old.
He entered with two former federal agents behind him, all three wearing dark coats over body armor.
Arthur found me beside the sofa with the phone still pressed against my cheek.
For one terrible second, his face lost every trace of professional control.
“Miss Clare.”
I had not heard anyone call me that in seven years.
He crossed the room, knelt without touching the shattered glass, and checked my breathing.
“An ambulance is on the way.”
“My father?”
“Three minutes behind us.”
One of the agents photographed the cane before sealing it inside a clear evidence bag.
The other recorded the broken vase, blood on the marble, torn silk, and security panel near the elevator.
Arthur covered me with his coat.
“Matthew left nine minutes ago.”
“How do you know?”
“Your father activated a private security agreement attached to this property.”
I stared at him.
I had not known such an agreement existed.
My father’s voice remained on the phone.
“I arranged it after you married.”
“You were watching me?”
“No.”
“I made sure someone could reach you if you ever called.”
The elevator opened again.
Paramedics rushed into the penthouse.
My father came behind them.
Richard Sterling had once entered hostile boardrooms while billion-dollar mergers collapsed around him.
He had never looked frightened.
He looked frightened now.
His silver hair was wet from the rain.
He had forgotten his coat.
When he saw the blood on the floor, he stopped moving.
“Dad.”
That single word brought him across the room.
He knelt beside the paramedics.
One of them asked him to step back.
He obeyed immediately.
No demands.
No name-dropping.
No attempt to control the people saving me.
He simply held my uninjured hand while they placed me on a stretcher.
“I should have called sooner,” I whispered.
“You called tonight.”
“It was enough.”
As they wheeled me toward the elevator, Arthur received a message.
He showed it to my father.
Matthew had entered a black sedan registered to NexusCore.
The vehicle was heading toward the company’s headquarters.
At 11:29 p.m., while I was being carried into an ambulance, Matthew used his executive credentials to enter the building.
At 11:31, my father made one call.
By 11:36, NexusCore’s primary credit facility was frozen.
At 11:38, every member of the board received an emergency notice.
At 11:42, Matthew discovered that his access to the company’s reserve accounts had been suspended.

Five minutes after my father learned what he had done, Matthew’s empire began falling apart.
He just did not know how much of it had always belonged to me.
