Chapter 14 - The Hidden Buyer

The hidden buyer was found through a draft side letter.

A foreign medical conglomerate called Orison Biotech.

Orison had been pursuing neonatal monitoring technology for years.

Crestline’s new sensor system could detect certain complications earlier than older equipment.

The patents had enormous potential.

Grant knew they were valuable.

He did not know how valuable.

Harbor North did.

That explained the low sale price.

They expected Grant’s personal desperation to make him accept quickly.

He almost did.

Everyone had been using everyone.

Grant used me.

Vanessa used Grant.

Thomas used confidential information to pay debts.

Harbor North used Grant’s urgency.

And somewhere in the middle sat a technology built by engineers who simply wanted to improve newborn care.

The irony was painful.

Noah and Elise were surrounded by machines while adults fought over money connected to machines like them.

I asked one question.

“Does Crestline own the patents?”

Rachel nodded.

“Yes.”

“Then we do not sell them.”

Grandfather looked at me.

“What do you want to do?”

“Keep developing them.”

“That could require significant capital.”

“Then we raise it properly.”

“No rushed deal?”

“No hidden buyer.”

He smiled slightly.

“There you are.”

“Who?”

“My granddaughter.”

I rolled my eyes.

But I knew what he meant.

Not wealthy.

Not powerful.

Responsible.

That afternoon, the court held another custody review.

Grant’s recent behavior mattered.

He had followed NICU rules.

He attended scheduled visits.

He had begun counseling.

But the audio recording remained devastating.

So did the divorce-day conduct.

The judge kept supervision in place.

Grant accepted it.

Outside the hearing, he approached me.

“Emma.”

I stopped.

He held a small bag.

“What is that?”

“The coat.”

I frowned.

“Vanessa returned it?”

“She left it at the apartment.”

“I already got my coat.”

He shook his head.

“Not that one.”

Inside was a baby blanket.

Ivory.

My mother had made it years ago.

I kept it in our nursery for Elise.

“I thought it was missing.”

“Vanessa packed it by mistake.”

I took it.

Then something fell from the folds.

A USB drive.

Grant stared.

“I’ve never seen that.”

Rachel picked it up carefully.

The drive belonged to Vanessa.

On it were copies of messages, contracts, and audio recordings she had apparently collected as insurance against Grant.

One recording began with Grant arguing with Harbor North.

Another voice entered halfway through.

A voice I recognized immediately.

Martin Ross.

Then Martin said:

“Emma’s medical crisis is the window.”

My blood turned cold.

The plan had depended on my emergency.

Maybe they had not caused it.

May you like

But they had been waiting for it.
