Chapter 2: The Empire Begins to Collapse

Andrew stood frozen in the middle of the marble driveway.
The black SUV disappeared through the iron gates without slowing down.
For the first time that night...
The silence felt different.
Not victorious.
Uncomfortable.
Margaret was the first to recover.
"Oh, for heaven's sake," she scoffed, waving one dismissive hand. "She's putting on a show."
Brenda laughed softly.
"She's hoping you'll chase after her."
Andrew forced a smile.
"She won't get far."
He looked toward the security guards.
"Change every access code tonight."
"I don't want Mariana stepping foot on this property again."
"Yes, sir."
The guests slowly relaxed.
Conversations resumed.
Champagne glasses clinked together.
A violinist awkwardly began playing again.
Within minutes, everyone was pretending nothing had happened.
Andrew accepted another glass of whiskey.
He raised it toward Brenda.
"To new beginnings."
She smiled.
"And fewer complications."
They kissed.
Applause broke out among several guests.
Margaret watched proudly.
Finally...
The burden was gone.
Or so they believed.
Across the city...
Mariana sat quietly inside the SUV.
She never looked back.
Her father sat across from her.
Victor Escalante.
The founder of Escalante Global Holdings.
A man whose name rarely appeared in newspapers...
Because the truly wealthy never needed publicity.
His silver hair was neatly combed.
His tailored navy suit looked as flawless as ever.
But his eyes...
His eyes remained fixed on the bruise slowly darkening across his daughter's cheek.
He spoke only once.
"Who touched you?"
Mariana looked out the window.
"It doesn't matter anymore."
"It matters to me."
She remained silent.
Victor nodded once.
That was enough.
He turned toward the legal director.
"Begin."
The attorney opened a thick leather folder.
"Phase One has already started."
"The banks have confirmed receipt of the emergency authorization."
"The holding companies are transferring ownership."
"The board members have been notified."
"Every power of attorney granted to Andrew Lawson has been revoked."
Mariana closed her eyes.
Four years.
She had built Andrew's empire using the Escalante investment network.
Officially...
None of it belonged to her.
On paper...
It belonged to dozens of investment firms.
Private trusts.
International holding companies.
Every one of them...
Controlled by her father.
Andrew never questioned it.
He simply enjoyed the money.
The prestige.
The lifestyle.
He believed he had earned it.
He never realized...
He had merely been borrowing it.
The SUV pulled into the underground entrance of Escalante Global Headquarters.
A fifty-story glass tower dominated the skyline.
The lobby lights were still glowing after midnight.
More than thirty executives waited inside.
Every one of them stood the moment Mariana entered.
No applause.
No celebration.
Only respect.
The chief financial officer stepped forward.
"We've been waiting for your authorization."
Mariana removed the wedding ring from her finger.
She stared at it for several seconds.
Then placed it gently on the conference table.
"It's over."
No one asked another question.
The meeting began immediately.
Across town...
Andrew's celebration lasted less than an hour.
His phone vibrated.
He frowned.
Unknown number.
He answered casually.
"This is Andrew Lawson."
"Mr. Lawson."
"This is First National Private Banking."
"We're calling regarding your executive accounts."
Andrew smiled.
"Yes?"
"I'm afraid all transactions have been suspended."
His smile faded.
"What?"
"The authorization came from the primary ownership entity."
"There must be some mistake."
"I'm sorry, sir."
"There isn't."
The line went dead.
Andrew stared at his phone.
Brenda frowned.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
He dialed another number.
No answer.
Then another.
Straight to voicemail.
His assistant called.
"Sir..."
She sounded terrified.
"The payroll transfer failed."
"What are you talking about?"
"The system says the company accounts are frozen."
Andrew's heartbeat quickened.
"Impossible."
"Fix it."
"I'm trying, sir."
"But..."
"Our financial authority has been removed."
"What?"
"The bank says your signature is no longer valid."
Andrew felt the room tilt.
Margaret noticed the color draining from his face.
"Andrew?"
Before he could answer...
Another phone rang.
Then another.
His chief operating officer.
"Andrew..."
"The board wants an emergency meeting."
"Investors are panicking."
"Our stock is collapsing in after-hours trading."
Brenda stepped closer.
"Baby..."
He shoved past her.
"No."
"No."
"This can't be happening."
He grabbed his laptop.
Logged into the corporate banking portal.
ACCESS DENIED.
He refreshed the page.
ACCESS DENIED.
Again.
Again.
Again.
His breathing became uneven.
Then an email appeared.
NOTICE OF IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF EXECUTIVE AUTHORITY
Effective immediately, all financial authority granted to Andrew Lawson has been permanently revoked under the controlling provisions of Escalante Global Holdings.
He stared at one line.
Primary Beneficial Owner: Mariana Escalante.
His fingers stopped moving.
His mouth went dry.
Margaret walked behind him.
"What does it say?"
Andrew couldn't answer.
She grabbed the laptop.
Read the screen.
Then laughed.
"A ridiculous forgery."
"No."
Andrew whispered.
"No..."
He suddenly remembered.
The jewelry box.
The slap.
Her smile.
"Remember every word you just said, Andrew."
A cold chill crept down his spine.
Across the city...
Mariana stood alone inside the executive boardroom overlooking the sleeping skyline.
The city lights reflected across the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Her father approached quietly.
"You can still stop this."
She smiled sadly.
"I stopped protecting him the moment he raised his hand."
Victor nodded.
"Then finish it."
Mariana picked up a single document.
It contained only one sentence.
File criminal fraud proceedings against Andrew Lawson and all co-conspirators.
She signed her name.
Without hesitation.
Without emotion.
Without looking back.
Outside...
The first rays of dawn began to break over the city.
Inside Andrew's mansion...
Phones continued ringing.
Executives kept resigning.
Lawyers refused to answer.
Investors demanded explanations.
The empire that had taken Mariana four years to build...
May you like
Had begun collapsing...
In less than four hours.
