CHAPTER TWO THE WOMAN WHO RAISED HER

Bianca stopped breathing.
Adrian closed his eyes.
The federal agents exchanged a quick glance.
“What letters?” one of them asked.
Nora reached into her black handbag and removed a thick bundle tied with blue string.
The paper was yellowed around the edges.
Some envelopes were nearly twenty years old.
Others had been mailed only months earlier.
“All of them were addressed to Bianca Hale,” Nora said. “She kept them inside a locked box beneath her bedroom floor.”
Bianca shook her head.
“She stole private property.”
“You stole my life.”
“I fed you. I clothed you.”
“You were ten years old when I was born.”
That question had already troubled me.
The birth certificate named Bianca as Nora’s mother, yet Bianca was only twenty-nine.
Nora held up the oldest envelope.
“The woman who first raised me was Bianca’s mother, Margaret Hale. Adrian paid her to leave the state with me. When Margaret died, Bianca began using her mother’s first name and assumed the identity connected to my records.”
Bianca’s real name, Nora explained, was Brianna Hale.
At eighteen, she had legally shortened it to Bianca and continued presenting herself as the woman named on the falsified birth certificate.
It was not merely vanity.
It allowed her to collect payments Adrian had promised Margaret.
It also allowed her to control Nora’s records.
School documents.
Medical forms.
Identification papers.
Every piece of Nora’s history passed through Bianca’s hands.
“You told me my father was dead,” Nora said.
Bianca looked at Adrian.
“He told me what to say.”
“You told me my mother had abandoned me.”
“I was trying to protect you.”
“Stop using that word.”
Nora’s voice rose for the first time.
“You didn’t protect me. You monitored me.”
Bianca flinched.
Nora explained that Adrian had visited them twice a year under the name Mr. Allen.
He arrived with cash, expensive gifts, and strict instructions.
Nora was never permitted to join social media.
She could not apply to universities without Bianca reviewing the forms.
She could not submit DNA samples to ancestry websites.
Whenever she asked questions about her birth, Bianca became angry.
Two years earlier, Nora found a photograph of Adrian inside Margaret’s old Bible.
When she confronted Bianca, Bianca claimed Adrian had once been Margaret’s employer.
That lie held until Nora saw Adrian’s face on television during a Sterling Global interview.
She recognized him immediately.
“I called him,” Nora said.
Every head turned toward Adrian.
“He came to see me the next day.”
“What did he tell you?” I asked.
“That you were alive.”
The answer struck me harder than everything else.
“He told you about me?”
“He said you were mentally ill. He said you had nearly killed me after giving birth. He said he had arranged my adoption to save me.”
Adrian finally spoke.
“She was eighteen. I didn’t want to destroy her with the truth.”
Nora faced him.
“You told me the truth would send Evelyn back to the hospital.”
“I believed that.”
“No. You were afraid I would contact her.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Nora looked at me again.
“I almost did.”
“What stopped you?”
“He showed me medical reports.”
The same false reports used to remove me from my company.
The same reports produced by the doctor Adrian had bribed.
“He said if I appeared suddenly, you might harm yourself,” Nora continued. “So I stayed away.”
She wiped a tear from her cheek with the back of her hand.
“Then three weeks ago, I received the anonymous package.”
Charles examined the letters while the agents photographed them.
One sentence appeared repeatedly.
Keep the girl invisible until her twenty-first birthday.
I looked at Charles.
“Why twenty-one?”
His expression darkened.
“The second will.”
Bianca immediately looked toward Adrian.
That movement told me she knew.
Charles lowered his voice.
“Your father signed an additional testament six months before Nora was born. Adrian found a copy years ago.”
“What does it say?”
Charles did not answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the ballroom ceiling.
Toward the east wing of the estate.
Toward the family vault hidden behind my father’s library.
“The original document is still inside this house.”
Adrian smiled for the first time since the agents entered.
It was not a frightened smile.
It was confident.
“You should read it, Evelyn.”
May you like
“Why?”
“Because once your daughter signs it, you will lose everything before midnight.”
