Chapter 4: The Price of Respect

Three months later...
Ward International reported record profits.
Not because Elena cut costs.
Because people trusted her.
Employees worked harder.
Clients returned.
Investors increased their positions.
Integrity had become profitable.
One rainy afternoon...
Michael entered Elena's office.
"There's someone downstairs requesting five minutes."
She didn't ask who.
She already knew.
Daniel.
He entered wearing a simple navy jacket instead of expensive designer suits.
He looked older.
Thinner.
Humbler.
For several seconds...
Neither spoke.
Finally...
"I'm sorry."
Elena remained silent.
"I blamed you because it was easier than admitting I needed you."
Still...
No answer.
"I loved the applause more than I loved the person who earned it."
His voice almost broke.
"I know forgiveness isn't something I deserve."
Elena slowly stood.
Walked toward the large window overlooking the city.
"You know what hurt the most?"
Daniel lowered his head.
"I could have forgiven failure."
She turned to face him.
"I could have forgiven poverty."
A pause.
"But you made me feel invisible while accepting credit for everything I sacrificed."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Every word landed like another sentence.
She walked to the door and opened it.
"I truly hope you build a life you're proud of."
Hope.
Not hatred.
Not revenge.
Just hope.
It somehow hurt more.
Daniel nodded once.
May you like
Then quietly left.
Neither of them looked back.
