Chapter 2: The Folder Beneath the Sink

Emily watched through the glass as Diane stretched one trembling arm beneath the kitchen sink. Her polished nails scraped against the cabinet floor until they found a thin black folder taped to the underside of the wood.

"Stop her," Robert said quietly.

His voice never rose.

It didn't have to.

One of the guests, an off-duty sheriff's deputy named Alan Brooks, instinctively stepped forward and gently caught Diane's wrist before she could pull the folder free.

"What are you doing?" Alan asked.

"That's... that's just old paperwork," Diane stammered.

Robert knelt, peeled the folder from the cabinet, and stood without opening it.

"You hid documents beneath the trash," he observed. "Interesting choice."

Mark rolled his eyes.

"My mother keeps everything. Are we seriously turning a birthday party into an investigation?"

Robert looked at him for several long seconds.

"You already turned it into one."

He finally opened the folder.

Inside were printed bank statements, photographs, handwritten notes, and copies of hospital discharge papers.

Emily's heart nearly stopped.

She recognized her own signature.

Except...

She had never signed those documents.

The first page authorized a joint line of credit in her name.

The second transferred ownership of the condominium she inherited from her grandmother into Mark's business trust.

The signature looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Robert didn't need more than a glance.

"They forged your name."

Silence swallowed the room.

Mark's smile disappeared completely.

Diane suddenly lunged for the folder.

"Those belong to our family!"

Robert stepped backward.

"No," he answered calmly. "They belong to evidence."

Emily stared through the window in disbelief.

She thought the bruises were the worst thing her husband had done.

She was wrong.

The violence had only been covering up something much bigger.

And Robert could already see the pattern.

The bruises weren't random.

They appeared every time Emily questioned missing money, missing documents, or unexpected withdrawals from her accounts.

Someone had been hurting her to keep her silent.

Robert slowly placed the folder on the dining table.

"Nobody leaves."

For the first time in years, Mark looked afraid.
