Chapter 2 – The Trap Was Never Mine

"Donovan," I said, forcing my voice to stay steady, "my husband is planning to murder me."
There was a long silence.
Then my attorney spoke four words.
"Don't confront him. Record everything."
By sunrise the next morning, Donovan had assembled a team I never expected.
A retired homicide detective.
A forensic security consultant.
And Detective Claire Morgan from the county major crimes unit.
At first, she looked skeptical.
"Mrs. Whitmore," she said, folding her hands on the conference table, "planning a murder isn't the same as committing one."
"I know."
"So why are you here?"
I slid my phone across the table.
On it was an audio recording.
Nathan.
His mother.
Every word.
"If Evelyn dies..."
"You get everything."
"The freezer."
"The broken release."
The room became completely silent.
Claire listened to the recording twice.
Then she looked directly at me.
"Do they know you heard them?"
"No."
She nodded slowly.
"Good."
That single word changed everything.
Instead of arresting Nathan immediately, they wanted undeniable proof.
The recording established conspiracy.
But attempted murder would destroy every possible defense.
Over the next forty-eight hours, HarborLock Cold Storage became the center of a carefully controlled operation.
The warehouse owner quietly cooperated.
A hidden emergency release was installed behind a removable insulation panel.
Thermal cameras were placed inside Unit 7.
Tiny microphones were embedded between steel shelves.
Outside, detectives waited inside an unmarked maintenance van.
An ambulance parked two blocks away.
Every second would be recorded.
Every word.
Every action.
Nathan believed he was setting the trap.
He never imagined he had walked into mine.
On Friday evening he smiled as he handed me the warehouse keys.
"Can you inspect Unit Seven tonight?" he asked casually.
"The seafood shipment is worth nearly two million."
I smiled back.
"Of course."
