Chapter 15 - DAVID TRIES TO TAKE BACK THE STORY
Eight months after Lily died, David changed strategy.
He stopped apologizing.
His legal team began describing him publicly as a grieving father manipulated by corrupt executives.
Anonymous stories appeared online.
David had been unaware of the scale of Martin Keller’s fraud.
David had gone on the yacht because his marriage was collapsing.
David learned about Lily’s death only after returning.
All technically selected pieces of truth.
All arranged to hide the whole.
Then came the worst headline.
WIDOW USES DAUGHTER’S DEATH TO SEIZE FAMILY COMPANY.
I stared at it for a long time.
Rebecca took my phone.
“Don’t read comments.”
“I’m not upset.”
“You’re shaking.”
I looked at my hands.
She was right.
David had found the last weapon.
My grief.
He wanted people to believe I had weaponized Lily.
I wanted to respond publicly.
Rebecca advised against it.
For three days, I stayed silent.
Then the company’s annual shareholder meeting arrived.
Reporters filled the lobby.
I stepped onto the stage.
No dramatic music.
No legal threats.
Just one photograph behind me.
Lily at six years old wearing a Vance Meridian hard hat that nearly covered her eyes.
“My daughter is not a corporate strategy.”
I said.
The room went completely quiet.
“She was a child.”
I continued.
“She loved strawberries, hated peas, drew horses that looked like dogs, and believed every hotel room was improved by jumping on the bed.”
A few people smiled.
“She died from a disease that moved faster than anyone could stop.”
I swallowed.
“What happened afterward did not cause her death.”
“It did not make her death meaningful.”
“It did not turn tragedy into destiny.”
I looked toward the cameras.
“But while she was alive, money held in trust for her was stolen.”
“Documents were forged.”
“Our company was used to hide private transactions.”
“And none of that becomes acceptable because the man responsible is grieving too.”
Silence.
“I do not want David punished because he missed Lily’s final hours.”
I paused.
“No court could punish that more completely than memory will.”
“What I want is accountability for what he actually did.”
The speech lasted four minutes.
By evening, the headline had changed.
