Chapter 1: The Man Who Came in the Rain

The rain fell like the sky was trying to bury every secret inside the Harrington mansion.

Lena Whitmore stumbled down the marble steps barefoot, her cream dress soaked through, her dark hair plastered to her face. Behind her, the mansion doors stood open, spilling golden light into the storm like a mouth that had just spit her out.

She didn’t look back.

Not until the headlights appeared.

A black Rolls-Royce swept through the iron gates and stopped at the base of the stairs. The rear door opened, and a silver-haired man stepped into the rain.

Arthur Whitmore.

Her father.

For one second, Lena forgot how to breathe.

Then she ran.

“Dad…”

Arthur caught her before her knees gave out. He wrapped his coat around her shoulders and held her like she was still the little girl who used to fall asleep in his study after nightmares.

“Please,” she whispered against his chest. “Take me home.”

Arthur’s jaw tightened.

Above them, on the second-floor balcony, Vanessa Harrington stood frozen in a black evening gown, diamonds glittering at her throat. She was beautiful, polished, terrified.

Arthur slowly lifted his eyes to her.

The rain slid down his face, but his voice was steady.

“He forgot who owns the night.”

Vanessa stepped back from the railing.

Because she knew exactly who he meant.

Her husband.

Lena’s husband.

Evan Harrington.

The man who had locked Lena inside that mansion for three days.

The man who believed marrying Arthur Whitmore’s daughter meant inheriting power.

The man who had forgotten that Arthur Whitmore did not give power away.

He only lent it.

And tonight, he had come to collect.
