Chapter 7 - THE COMPANY WITH MY SIGNATURE

Mark met us in Sarah’s office.
He looked like a man who had not slept in weeks.
He brought two encrypted drives.
A paper ledger.
And resignation papers already signed.
“I should’ve contacted you sooner.”
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you?”
“Cowardice.”
No excuse.
I respected that more than a polished answer.
Mark explained.
Nathan had created several investment entities.
Some legitimate.
Some designed to move money away from creditors.
Two used my name.
Rachel Whitmore Holdings.
RM Legacy Partners.
I had never heard of either.
My signature appeared on annual consent forms.
Loan guarantees.
Investment approvals.
All fake.
Mark discovered the pattern when Nathan asked him to backdate a board resolution.
He refused.
Nathan threatened to fire him.
Then told him something worse.
“If Rachel becomes difficult, we’ll say she authorized everything.”
I felt numb.
Mark continued.
“He’s been preparing that defense for over a year.”
Sarah asked.
“Why over a year?”
Mark looked at me.
“Because the fund started losing money before Emma was conceived.”
Nathan knew.
Before he encouraged another pregnancy.
Before he told me we were entering our best years.
Before he promised to slow down.
He knew financial disaster might come.
And he had been positioning me between himself and the consequences.
“Why Lauren?”
I asked.
Mark looked uncomfortable.
“I don’t know.”
“Try.”
“She was on payroll.”
My stomach dropped.
“At Nathan’s company?”
“Through consulting entities.”
“How much?”
“About four hundred thousand over three years.”
Lauren was not merely the mistress.
She was financially tied to the scheme.
Mark handed Sarah another file.
Payments to Lauren.
Payments to Diane.
Payments to a private psychiatrist.
I stared.
“Who is the doctor?”
“Dr. Richard Vale.”
I did not know the name.
Mark did.
“Nathan asked him for a preliminary opinion based on descriptions of your behavior.”
My chest tightened.
“He never met me.”
“No.”
“What opinion?”
Sarah opened the report.
It described a hypothetical postpartum patient.
History of emotional instability.
Possible delusional jealousy.
Risk of impulsive behavior.
Recommendation.
Temporary supervised childcare if symptoms escalated.
My hands began to shake.
The anonymous note had been right.
Do not give him the performance he wants.
Nathan planned to provoke me.
Lauren at the hospital.
The secret son.
My mother’s bracelet.
Moving into my house.
Mocking Emma.
He wanted a scene.
A screaming wife.
Maybe someone captured on video.
Something he could attach to that report.
I suddenly understood the bracelet.
It was not careless.
It was bait.
Lauren wearing my dead mother’s jewelry in front of me had been deliberate.
I looked at Mark.
“Did Nathan tell her to wear it?”
“I don’t know.”
Sarah said.
“We find out.”
Then Mark slid one final paper across the table.
A calendar entry from Nathan’s private assistant.
POSTPARTUM MEETING - VALE / DIANE / LAUREN.
Scheduled for the day after I came home.
That morning.
May you like
Nathan had planned everything.
Except my silence.
