Chapter 1: The Children at the Wedding

The ballroom went so silent that even the violinist lowered her bow.

Ryan Montgomery stood beneath an arch of white roses with his bride’s hand still resting in his. A minute earlier, he had been smiling like a man who had won.

Now he looked like a man watching his grave open.

The little boy’s question hung in the air.

“Mommy… is that the man who didn’t want us?”

Vanessa slowly pulled her hand away from Ryan.

“Ryan,” she whispered. “Tell me those children are not yours.”

Ryan opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because the answer was standing right in front of him.

Two boys with his hazel eyes.

His jawline.

His childhood face.

And beside them, my daughter held my hand tightly, watching the room with quiet confusion.

Rebecca Montgomery clutched her pearls so hard her knuckles turned white.

“This is impossible,” she breathed.

I looked at her calmly.

“No, Rebecca. What was impossible was surviving what your family did to me.”

Guests began whispering.

Ryan stepped down from the altar.

“Mariana…”

The way he said my name almost made me laugh. Three years ago, he had said it like I was a burden. Now he said it like I was his last chance.

I lifted my chin.

“Don’t come closer.”

He stopped.

Vanessa turned toward him, her perfect face cracking.

“You told me she couldn’t have children.”

Ryan swallowed.

Rebecca snapped, “This woman is lying.”

Before I could answer, the ballroom doors opened again.

Alexander Whitmore walked in.

The murmurs died instantly.

Every wealthy family in Los Angeles knew that name. Whitmore Hotels. Whitmore Holdings. Whitmore Bank. A man powerful enough to ruin reputations without raising his voice.

He stopped beside me and placed one protective hand on my shoulder.

“She is not lying,” Alexander said. “And if anyone in this room doubts her, I brought proof.”

Ryan’s face went pale.

Alexander handed a folder to the wedding planner, who froze before passing it to Vanessa.

Inside were copies of medical records, birth certificates, and DNA results.

Vanessa read one page.

Then another.

Then she looked at Ryan as if she had never seen him before.

“You abandoned your pregnant wife?”

Ryan’s voice broke.

“I didn’t know.”

I stepped forward.

“No. You didn’t ask.”

The words landed harder than a slap.

“You threw me out the same day I found out I was pregnant. You let your mother call me broken. You let another woman sit in my home while my suitcase waited outside.”

Ryan looked at the children.

His eyes filled with panic, regret, and hunger.

“My sons…”

I moved in front of them.

“They are not prizes you get to claim after losing everything else.”

Vanessa dropped the bouquet.

White flowers scattered across the marble floor.

Then she turned to the guests.

May you like

“The wedding is over.”

And just like that, Ryan Montgomery’s perfect celebration collapsed.
