Chapter 2: The Empire Begins to Fall

The black Rolls-Royce glided through the empty streets of Manhattan with almost unnatural silence.

Inside the cabin, Isabella Montrose sat perfectly still.

The sting on her cheek remained.

So did the dried blood across her palm.

Neither bothered her anymore.

Pain was temporary.

Betrayal left deeper scars.

Across from her sat Richard Hawthorne, her father's chief legal adviser for nearly thirty years. His silver hair was immaculate despite the hour, and his tailored charcoal suit looked untouched by the rain falling outside.

He studied her carefully.

"You never told him."

It wasn't a question.

Isabella kept her eyes on the city lights sliding past the tinted window.

"I wanted him to love me."

Richard nodded.

"And did he?"

Silence answered first.

Finally she whispered,

"I think he loved the version of me that made him feel powerful."

The Rolls-Royce turned onto Fifth Avenue.

Ahead, a sixty-story glass tower dominated the skyline.

Its illuminated logo glowed against the night.

MONTROSE GLOBAL.

One of the largest private investment groups in the world.

The company few people recognized.

The company that quietly owned pieces of hundreds of corporations while allowing others to stand in front of the cameras.

Cross Industries was one of them.

Officially...

Damian Cross was celebrated as the brilliant entrepreneur who transformed a struggling construction company into a multibillion-dollar empire.

Unofficially...

Montrose Global had rescued Cross Industries four separate times.

Every bailout had remained confidential.

Every emergency loan had been disguised.

Every acquisition had been hidden behind shell corporations.

Only six people on Earth knew the complete truth.

Damian had never been one of them.

The elevator opened directly onto the executive floor.

More than forty people were already waiting.

Senior attorneys.

Investment directors.

Financial analysts.

Cybersecurity specialists.

The chairman of the board.

Every person stood simultaneously.

No one spoke.

Then...

One by one...

They lowered their heads.

"Good evening, Ms. Montrose."

The words echoed across the enormous boardroom.

At the far end of the room stood a tall man with snow-white hair and sharp blue eyes.

Alexander Montrose.

Her father.

Despite being seventy-two, he still possessed the commanding presence that had intimidated presidents and billionaires alike.

For a brief second...

He looked less like a business titan.

More like a father seeing his daughter after a storm.

His eyes landed on the bruise spreading across her cheek.

The room became noticeably colder.

"Who did that?"

His voice was almost gentle.

Which frightened everyone more.

Isabella tried to smile.

"It doesn't matter anymore."

Alexander slowly removed his glasses.

"It matters to me."

No one moved.

Everyone in the room understood exactly what that tone meant.

Somewhere...

Someone's life had just become unimaginably difficult.

Richard placed a thick leather folder on the conference table.

"Phase One is ready."

Alexander didn't even glance at it.

Instead, he looked at Isabella.

"This is your decision."

She stared at the documents.

Inside them lay enough legal authority to erase everything Damian believed belonged to him.

She remembered their first apartment.

The cheap furniture they assembled together.

Late-night pizza on the living room floor.

Dreams they once shared.

Back then...

He wasn't cruel.

Just ambitious.

Somewhere along the way...

Ambition became arrogance.

Arrogance became entitlement.

Entitlement became violence.

She closed the folder.

"Execute."

No hesitation.

No anger.

Just certainty.

Richard pressed a single button on the conference phone.

"Proceed."

Within seconds...

Across three continents...

More than eighty attorneys began filing emergency financial actions.

Banks received authenticated freeze orders.

Investment firms suspended transfers.

International lenders revoked unsecured credit.

Holding companies exercised dormant control clauses buried inside contracts signed years earlier.

One signature after another.

One authorization after another.

Like dominoes.

The financial empire surrounding Cross Industries began collapsing from its foundation.

No explosions.

No shouting.

Just paperwork.

Alexander watched the digital world map projected onto the wall.

Tiny blue lights slowly turned red.

London.

Singapore.

Zurich.

Dubai.

New York.

Every red light represented another completed action.

Richard checked his tablet.

"Thirty-two percent completed."

A minute later...

"Fifty-seven percent."

Then...

"Ninety-four percent."

Finally...

He looked up.

"Phase One is complete."

No applause followed.

Only silence.

At exactly 8:17 p.m., Damian Cross raised his champagne glass.

The birthday party had become livelier after Isabella left.

Vanessa leaned comfortably against his shoulder.

Guests laughed.

A jazz quartet played softly in the background.

Evelyn was telling everyone she'd finally gotten rid of "the family's biggest mistake."

Then Damian's phone vibrated.

He ignored it.

Another vibration.

Then another.

Then five in rapid succession.

He frowned.

His chief financial officer rarely called during private events.

"Excuse me."

He stepped into his study and answered.

"What?"

The voice on the other end sounded terrified.

"Sir... every operating account has been frozen."

Damian laughed.

"Impossible."

"I'm looking at them right now."

"There has to be a system error."

"There isn't."

"What are you talking about?"

"The banks received legal enforcement notices."

Damian's smile disappeared.

"What notices?"

"I don't know."

"But payroll accounts are inaccessible."

"Our corporate credit lines have been suspended."

"The merger payment scheduled tomorrow morning has been canceled."

His heartbeat accelerated.

"Call the bank president."

"I already did."

"And?"

"He refuses to discuss it over the phone."

Damian's grip tightened around the device.

"This is ridiculous."

Before the CFO could answer...

Another call interrupted.

General Counsel.

He switched lines.

"What now?"

"Damian..."

The attorney sounded pale.

"We have a bigger problem."

"What?"

"The holding company."

"What about it?"

There was a long silence.

Then...

"They've exercised controlling rights."

Damian blinked.

"What holding company?"

"The one above Cross Industries."

"We've never had one."

Another pause.

"Yes..."

"We have."

Across town...

The emergency board meeting began.

Directors filled every chair.

Faces tense.

Voices overlapping.

No one understood why trading partners had suddenly suspended business.

The massive digital screen displayed a single legal document.

NOTICE OF CONTROLLING SHAREHOLDER ACTION

One director adjusted his glasses.

"This has to be fraudulent."

Another shook his head.

"The signatures are authenticated."

Someone whispered,

"Who owns the holding company?"

No one answered.

The corporate secretary slowly cleared his throat.

"We've... never actually met the majority owner."

The room erupted.

"What do you mean you've never met them?"

"They've always voted through legal representatives."

"So who are they?"

Before anyone could respond...

The conference room doors opened.

Every head turned.

Richard Hawthorne walked inside.

Behind him...

Alexander Montrose.

Then...

A woman wearing the same simple navy dress she had worn to Damian's birthday dinner.

The bruise on her cheek was impossible to ignore.

For several seconds...

Nobody recognized her.

Then one director stood abruptly.

His face turned white.

"My God..."

Another director followed.

Then another.

Chairs scraped loudly against the polished floor as every board member rose to their feet.

The room, moments earlier filled with panic, fell into complete silence.

Richard placed a leather portfolio on the table.

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

His voice carried effortlessly through the room.

"I would like to formally introduce the majority beneficial owner of Cross Holdings."

He stepped aside.

Every eye fixed on Isabella.

She looked around the room with calm, unreadable eyes.

Then she spoke.

"My name..."

She paused just long enough for the silence to become unbearable.

"...is Isabella Montrose."

"You've known me for four years."

"But not by my real name."

Several directors exchanged stunned glances.

One elderly board member whispered,

"She's... the owner?"

Richard nodded once.

"Effective immediately..."

He slid a sealed resolution onto the conference table.

"...Ms. Montrose has assumed direct control of all voting rights representing fifty-one percent of Cross Holdings."

The color drained from every face in the room.

At that exact moment...

Miles away...

Damian's phone rang again.

This time, it was the Chairman of the Board.

He answered with forced confidence.

"I was just about to call you."

The chairman didn't waste a second.

"Get to headquarters."

"Now."

"Why?"

A long silence.

Then seven words that turned Damian's blood to ice.

"Your wife owns your entire empire."

Damian laughed.

He actually laughed.

Then...

No one on the other end joined him.

The line went dead.

Standing alone in his study, surrounded by imported wood, priceless paintings, and trophies celebrating his success...

Damian slowly realized...

For the first time in his life...

He had absolutely no idea what was happening.

Outside the study window, thunder rolled across the Manhattan skyline.

Far away...

A storm had finally reached the Cross family.

May you like

And before dawn...

It would wash away everything they believed they owned.
