Chapter 1: The Silence in the Waiting Room

The waiting room smelled like disinfectant, burnt coffee, and fear.

I sat beneath the humming fluorescent lights with Lily’s pink rabbit pajama top folded in my lap. A nurse had taken it off her because the fabric was damp from spilled juice and pressed too tightly against the swelling on her cheek.

There was a red mark across the left side of her face.

A mark no child should ever wear.

Every time the emergency room doors opened, my body jumped.

Every time a nurse walked past, I searched her face for answers.

Then a doctor finally came out.

“Ms. Carter?”

I stood so fast the pajama top slipped from my hands.

“She’s stable,” he said first.

My knees nearly gave out.

“But she has a mild concussion, facial burns, and soft tissue trauma. We’re keeping her overnight for observation.”

I covered my mouth.

“She’s four,” I whispered.

The doctor’s expression shifted.

Not sympathy anymore.

Concern.

“Can you tell me again exactly what happened?”

Before I could answer, a police officer stepped into the hallway behind him.

And just like that, I understood.

This was no longer a family argument.

This was a crime.
