Chapter 14 - LILY

Lily Grace Monroe had disappeared from her school at 1:35 p.m.

A woman presented documents claiming a family emergency.

The documents carried a solicitor’s seal.

Simon Kessler’s.

The school secretary called Lily’s mother ten minutes later.

By then the car was gone.

Police recovered camera footage.

Peter Lang drove.

A woman sat in the back seat beside Lily.

Nathan expected Eleanor.

It was not her.

He did not recognize the woman.

Adrian did.

He stared at the police monitor.

“No.”

Nathan looked at him.

“Who is she?”

Adrian went pale.

“Rachel.”

“Rachel who?”

“Rachel Vale.”

Nathan stared.

“Vale?”

“Jonathan’s daughter.”

Bennett frowned.

“Dr. Vale has a daughter?”

Adrian nodded.

“She used to work for Simon.”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“Of course she did.”

“What kind of work?”

“Trust administration.”

Nathan looked at Vale through the glass wall of another interview room.

The doctor had never mentioned her.

Bennett questioned him immediately.

Vale’s reaction seemed genuine.

“Rachel?”

“Yes.”

“What has she done?”

“She assisted Peter Lang in removing Lily Monroe from school.”

Vale stared.

“Who is Lily?”

Nathan almost shouted.

“Adrian’s daughter.”

Vale turned toward Adrian.

“You have a child?”

Adrian looked away.

Vale seemed stunned.

Nathan watched.

Another secret even the doctor did not know.

“Where would Rachel take her?”

Bennett asked.

Vale shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last speak to your daughter?”

“Three weeks ago.”

“Does she work for Simon?”

“She did.”

“Until when?”

“I thought she left six months ago.”

Nathan stared.

“You thought?”

Vale looked exhausted.

“Rachel and I barely speak.”

“Why?”

Vale closed his eyes.

“Because she discovered what I did to you.”

Nathan frowned.

“What did she do?”

“She called me a coward.”

Nathan almost laughed.

“She was correct.”

Vale accepted it.

“She quit Simon’s firm shortly after.”

“Then why is she with Peter?”

“I don’t know.”

Bennett leaned forward.

“Could she be helping Lily?”

Everyone stopped.

Nathan had assumed abduction.

But perhaps Rachel was intervening.

“Why use forged documents?”

Bennett asked.

“Why not call police?”

Vale looked toward Nathan.

“Because Rachel doesn’t trust police around the Harcourts.”

Nathan could hardly blame her anymore.

They traced Rachel’s phone.

Turned off.

Peter’s phone.

Turned off.

Vehicle abandoned.

Another dead end.

Nathan confronted Adrian privately.

“Tell me everything about Lily.”

Adrian stared at the floor.

“I met her mother, Sophie Monroe, ten years ago.”

“Thomas’s sister.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know who she was?”

“Not at first.”

“Did she?”

“No.”

“How convenient.”

“It was.”

“What happened?”

“We were together for six months.”

“Then she discovered my surname.”

Nathan frowned.

“She knew about the Ellis history?”

“Yes.”

“Did she leave?”

“Yes.”

“Did she know she was pregnant?”

“Not when she left.”

“When did you find out?”

“After Lily was born.”

“Why didn’t you tell us?”

Adrian laughed bitterly.

“Tell Mother?”

Nathan understood.

Still, he pushed.

“Why not tell me?”

“Because Simon knew.”

Nathan stared.

“What does Simon have to do with everything in your life?”

“He found Sophie.”

“How?”

“I asked him to.”

Nathan shook his head.

“Another mistake.”

“I know.”

“What did he do?”

“He created a private support arrangement.”

“Why?”

“To keep Lily out of public records connecting her to the Harcourts.”

Nathan stared.

“Was that your idea?”

“Yes.”

“Or Simon’s?”

Adrian hesitated.

That was answer enough.

“You let him hide your own child.”

“I thought I was protecting her.”

“You were protecting yourself.”

Adrian looked up.

“Yes.”

Nathan appreciated the admission.

“What does Lily know?”

“She knows I’m her father.”

Nathan was surprised.

“Since when?”

“Two years.”

“Does she know about Harcourt?”

“Yes.”

“Does she know Thomas?”

“Yes.”

Nathan rubbed his face.

“So everyone knew except me.”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“Pretty much.”

Nathan’s anger cooled into exhaustion.

“Why would Simon want Jamie if Lily gives him a stronger legal position?”

Adrian shook his head.

“I don’t know.”

Nathan thought.

Maybe Jamie was leverage against Nathan.

Lily was leverage against Adrian and Thomas.

Simon had been collecting heirs like pieces on a board.

Control the children.

Control the adults.

Nathan’s stomach turned.

“He doesn’t need the company.”

Adrian looked at him.

“What?”

“He needs us fighting over the company.”

Adrian frowned.

Nathan continued.

“As long as we all want different outcomes, Simon stands in the middle.”

“He controls information.”

“He controls documents.”

“He controls who trusts whom.”

Adrian stared.

“If we stop fighting—”

“He loses leverage.”

Nathan immediately called Thomas.

Thomas answered.

Nathan told him about Lily.

Silence.

Then Thomas said.

“I know.”

Nathan froze.

“You knew she was missing?”

“No.”

“I knew Lily was Adrian’s daughter.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Again.

Secrets within secrets.

“How long?”

“Since she was two.”

“Why didn’t you expose it?”

“She’s my niece.”

“I don’t care about Adrian.”

“I care about her.”

Nathan felt some respect for him.

Thomas continued.

“Sophie made me promise.”

“Why?”

“She believed your mother would use Lily.”

“She was right.”

“Yes.”

“Did Amelia know?”

“Yes.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

Of course she did.

Amelia had known nearly everything.

She had tried to untangle an entire web alone.

“Did Amelia ever meet Lily?”

“Once.”

Nathan felt pain.

His wife had met a niece he never knew existed.

“What did she say?”

Thomas paused.

“She said Lily and Jamie deserved families without secrets.”

Nathan almost broke.

Even before Jamie could remember much, Amelia had been trying to protect two children from generations of lies.

Thomas spoke again.

“Nathan.”

“Yes?”

“There is somewhere Simon may take her.”

“Where?”

“The old Ellis property.”

“Margaret’s?”

“No.”

“My mother’s family had a farm outside York.”

“Does Peter know?”

“Simon knows.”

Nathan looked toward Bennett.

Police moved immediately.

Three hours later they approached the farm.

A light burned in the kitchen.

A car stood behind the barn.

Bennett’s team surrounded the property.

Nathan stayed behind the line.

Adrian insisted on coming.

Thomas did too.

Police entered.

No gunfire.

No struggle.

Minutes later, an officer appeared.

“We found the child.”

Adrian nearly collapsed.

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

“Who else?”

“One woman.”

“Rachel Vale.”

“Yes.”

“Peter?”

“No.”

Nathan entered only after the building was secured.

Lily sat at the kitchen table wrapped in a blanket.

She had Adrian’s dark eyes.

Sophie arrived minutes later and ran to her daughter.

The reunion was private.

Nathan watched from the hallway.

Rachel Vale sat in another room with police.

She had surrendered willingly.

Bennett questioned her.

“Why did you take Lily?”

Rachel looked toward Vale, who had been brought under guard.

“To keep Peter from taking her.”

Nathan’s stomach tightened.

Again.

Another apparent kidnapping had been a rescue.

“How did you know?”

Rachel looked at her father.

“Because I used to manage Simon’s contingency files.”

Vale looked shocked.

“You never told me.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You never told me you were drugging Nathan.”

Vale lowered his eyes.

Bennett continued.

“What contingency files?”

“Plans.”

“For what?”

“For every person Simon considered a risk.”

Nathan felt cold.

“Me?”

Rachel looked at him.

“You had the largest file.”

“Jamie?”

“Yes.”

“Lily?”

“Yes.”

“Thomas?”

“Yes.”

“Amelia?”

Rachel’s expression softened.

“That file was closed before I began working there.”

Nathan looked away.

“Where are the files?”

“Encrypted server.”

“Location?”

“Simon’s private archive.”

“Where?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Basement beneath his old office.”

Bennett frowned.

“We searched his office.”

“Not that one.”

Rachel gave an address.

Nathan recognized it.

A Georgian townhouse formerly owned by Harcourt Global.

It had been sold twelve years earlier.

To a shell company.

Simon’s shell company.

Rachel continued.

“Peter was going to collect Lily today.”

“I saw the message on Simon’s old system.”

“How did you still have access?”

“I built part of it.”

“So you took her first.”

“Yes.”

“Why not call police?”

Rachel looked directly at Bennett.

“Because Simon paid police officers before.”

The room became silent.

Bennett did not react defensively.

“Names?”

Rachel provided three.

None worked on Bennett’s unit.

But all had handled previous Harcourt incidents.

Nathan thought of Amelia’s crash investigation.

If Simon had compromised investigators then, evidence could have disappeared.

The scale kept expanding.

Rachel looked toward Nathan.

“There is something you need to know.”

“What?”

“Simon did not design the guardianship amendment.”

Nathan frowned.

“You said you managed his files.”

“I did.”

“He used the amendment.”

“He did not write the original.”

“Who did?”

Rachel looked toward Adrian.

Adrian went pale.

Nathan followed her gaze.

“No.”

Adrian whispered.

“Nathan.”

“Do not.”

Rachel continued.

“Adrian asked Simon to draft a mechanism transferring Jamie’s temporary guardianship into the family trust.”

Nathan stared at his brother.

“Why?”

Adrian’s face collapsed.

“It was before Amelia died.”

Nathan’s voice turned cold.

“Explain.”

Adrian rubbed his face.

“Mother said Amelia was trying to isolate you from us.”

“So you planned to take my son?”

“No.”

“She said if you and Amelia separated, she needed legal protection.”

Nathan stared.

“My wife and I were not separating.”

“I know that now.”

“You knew it then.”

Adrian said nothing.

Nathan stepped closer.

“You helped create a document that could remove Jamie from me.”

“I never thought Simon would use it.”

Nathan laughed.

“You never think.”

“You sign.”

“You hide.”

“You borrow.”

“You lie.”

“You let other people carry out the ugly part so you can tell yourself you did not intend the result.”

Adrian’s eyes filled with tears.

Nathan did not stop.

“Amelia died because you wanted to delay her.”

“You helped build the guardianship trap.”

“You told Simon about Vale drugging me.”

“You gave him access to my medication.”

“Every disaster has your fingerprints around the edges.”

Adrian whispered.

“I know.”

Nathan stared at him.

“No.”

“You are only beginning to know.”

He walked away.

Rachel watched.

Then she said.

“There is one more thing.”

Nathan stopped.

“What?”

“The guardianship document was revised six months after Amelia died.”

“By Simon?”

“Yes.”

“What changed?”

Rachel looked toward Lily in the next room.

“He added another child.”

Nathan’s stomach tightened.

“Lily.”

Rachel nodded.

“If Jamie became unavailable as beneficiary, Lily could be inserted into a settlement structure.”

Thomas swore quietly.

Nathan looked at Rachel.

“Why?”

“Because Simon realized she carried both bloodlines.”

Nathan closed his eyes.

“What did he call the plan?”

Rachel answered.

“Continuity.”

Nathan felt sick.

Children reduced to continuity.

Assets.

Bloodlines.

Voting rights.

Bargaining chips.

Rachel continued.

“Simon believed whichever child remained under his control could stabilize the company.”

Nathan looked toward the room where Lily sat with her mother.

“Not anymore.”

Rachel’s eyes met his.

“Then you need to move quickly.”

“Why?”

“Because Simon prepared a final contingency.”

Nathan stared.

“What?”

“If he was arrested, exposed, or removed, the confidential files would automatically be distributed.”

“To whom?”

“Press.”

“Regulators.”

“Tax authorities.”

“Shareholders.”

Nathan almost laughed.

“He built a dead-man switch.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Nathan’s heart skipped.

“What time?”

“Nine.”

It was already after seven in the evening.

Bennett frowned.

“Can you stop it?”

Rachel shook her head.

“Not remotely.”

“Where is the server?”

“The archive.”

Nathan looked at Bennett.

“We go now.”

Rachel interrupted.

“There is a problem.”

“What?”

“The archive has biometric access.”

“Simon?”

“Yes.”

“He is in custody.”

“Then use him.”

Rachel shook her head.

“There are two authorized people.”

Nathan stared.

“Who is the second?”

Rachel looked toward Dr. Vale.

Vale’s face went white.

May you like

“My father.”
