Chapter 19 - MARGARET SAW LILY AGAIN

We waited another four months.

Then Emily made the decision.

Not me.

Not Margaret.

Emily.

A supervised visit.

One hour.

Public park.

No gifts.

No promises.

No discussion of family disputes.

If Margaret blamed Emily even once, we would leave.

When we arrived, Mom was already sitting on a bench.

She looked smaller than I remembered.

Lily held my hand.

Mom stood.

Her eyes filled instantly.

But she did not rush forward.

That mattered.

“Hi, Lily.”

Lily looked at Emily.

Emily nodded.

“Hi, Grandma.”

Mom smiled.

Then she looked at Emily.

“Thank you for coming.”

Emily simply said, “Okay.”

They did not hug.

That mattered too.

The visit was awkward.

Mom asked about school.

Lily talked about a science project.

Mom listened.

Then Lily surprised everyone.

“Grandma?”

“Yes?”

“Do you remember when you hit Mommy?”

Mom went pale.

Emily’s hand tightened around mine.

“Yes.”

Mom answered.

“Why?”

For several seconds, Margaret looked like she might reach for an excuse.

Then she stopped.

“Because I was angry and cruel.”

Lily frowned.

“Did Mommy make you?”

“No.”

The word came quickly.

“No, sweetheart.”

“That was my choice.”

Lily thought about that.

“Are you going to do it again?”

Mom’s eyes filled.

“No.”

“If I ever feel that angry again, I need to leave the room.”

Lily nodded as if evaluating a school answer.

“Okay.”

Then she ran toward the swings.

I looked at my mother.

Mom looked at Emily.

“I’m sorry.”

Emily did not say she forgave her.

She said, “I heard you.”

That was enough.

For now.

Healing did not require pretending trust returned because someone finally found the right words.

Trust would be behavior.

Time.

Consistency.

Maybe a relationship would grow.

Maybe it would not.

May you like

But whatever came next would happen on new terms.

No one was required to bleed so Margaret could remain comfortable.
