Chapter 4: The Trial

Six months later.

Courtroom Four was completely silent.

My parents sat together at the defense table.

For the first time in my life, neither looked powerful.

Jurors watched the projection screen as video after video played.

The brick.

The laughter.

The threats.

My father's desperate attempt to hide the weapon.

Then came the recording no one expected.

My mother whispering—

"If she disappears before the trust challenge, everything stays with Amelia."

The courtroom became perfectly still.

Defense counsel slowly removed his glasses.

Even he knew.

There was no explaining that sentence away.

Witness after witness testified.

The emergency physician.

The forensic document examiner.

The neighbors.

Even one of the dinner guests who admitted why no one intervened.

"We were terrified."

The prosecutor nodded.

"But you recorded."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The witness looked directly toward the jury.

"Because I thought someone had to survive the truth."

Two weeks later, the verdict arrived.

Guilty.

Assault.

Witness intimidation.

Conspiracy.

Forgery.

Fraud.

The civil judgment followed shortly afterward.

Every stolen asset.

Every hidden investment.

Every dollar earned through forged documents.

Returned with interest.

My sister's inheritance vanished under the forfeiture clause.

Everything transferred exactly as my grandfather intended.

Justice had simply taken the long road.
