Chapter 18 - ROBERT WITHOUT AN AUDIENCE

My father came to my office Sunday afternoon.

The gate called ahead, so I had time to prepare.

He entered carrying no cedar box, no microphone, and no audience he could control.

He looked smaller in the visitor’s chair.

“Your mother is staying with Melanie,” he said.

“I know.”

“She took half her clothes.”

“That sounds deliberate.”

He studied the photographs on my wall.

For once, he looked at them rather than past them.

“I did not understand any of this,” he said.

“You did not try.”

“Mercer was always there.”

“He was not in our house.”

“He was in your face.”

The honesty shocked me.

Dad pressed his palms together.

“Every time you talked about ships, I heard him.”

“Every time you stood straighter than I taught you, I saw him.”

“So you punished me.”

“I was afraid you would learn the truth and decide I was nothing.”

“You were my father.”

“That should have been enough.”

“It was enough until you turned it into a prison.”

He looked down.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

“I loved you,” he said.

“I believe you.”

His eyes lifted with sudden hope.

“But love does not erase harm,” I continued.

“And fear does not excuse thirty-six years of choices.”

He asked whether I would tell people he was not my real father.

There it was again.

Not what I needed.

Not what Mom needed.

Reputation.

“You are the father who raised me,” I said.

“Thomas is my biological father.”

“Both facts are true.”

“What happens next depends on whether you can live without changing either one.”

He noticed the ceremony roster on my desk.

“Am I invited tomorrow?”

I considered the question carefully.

“Not yet.”

Pain crossed his face.

I let it remain.

“Write to me,” I said.

“Do not explain what you intended.”

“Write what you did.”

“When you can do that, we will talk.”

He stood and walked to the door.

Before leaving, he touched the frame containing my first command photograph.

“I was proud,” he said.

May you like

“I just hated that I was proud.”

Then he left me with the first honest thing he had said in years.
