Chapter 7 - The Man I Married

Ryan came home the next afternoon.

Not into the penthouse.

To the sidewalk outside the building.

His attorney had warned him not to approach me, but apparently Ryan still believed rules were suggestions when they interfered with his plans.

I watched him through the lobby camera.

He wore the same suit from New Year’s Eve.

Wrinkled now.

His hair uncombed.

He looked smaller.

I expected satisfaction.

Instead, I felt grief.

Not for the man downstairs.

For the one I had thought existed.

Ryan called.

I answered only because Maya was beside me and recording lawfully.

“Claire.”

“You cannot be here.”

“I need ten minutes.”

“No.”

“Please.”

The word sounded unfamiliar coming from him.

“I know what Dad did was wrong.”

“What you did was wrong.”

Silence.

Then he sighed.

“I panicked.”

“You restrained me.”

“He was furious.”

“So you gave him my body to punish.”

“That’s not what happened.”

“I have video.”

Ryan’s silence lasted longer this time.

Then he changed tactics.

“The business was supposed to make money.”

“There it is.”

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

“After the Breckenridge property opened.”

“You forged my signature.”

“I used resources that belonged to our marriage.”

“My identity is not a marital resource.”

His voice sharpened.

“You always do this.”

“Do what?”

“Make everything about what you earned.”

I almost could not believe him.

“You used my income on loan documents.”

“Because banks trust you.”

That sentence exposed the entire marriage.

Ryan had not wanted my money alone.

He wanted my credibility.

My career.

My credit.

My name.

The parts of me he mocked were the same parts he needed.

“What did you try to download from my company?”

Silence.

Then footsteps.

Ryan began pacing outside.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Wrong answer.”

“Claire.”

“What was Grant planning to do with confidential merger information?”

He stopped moving.

That was enough.

I felt cold.

“You knew.”

Ryan lowered his voice.

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand Dad.”

“I understand him better than I did yesterday.”

“He owes people money.”

“How much?”

Ryan said nothing.

“How much?”

“A lot.”

“Who?”

“Claire, please.”

Then he said something that changed the entire case.

“If they find out the Alpine project is frozen, they’ll come after him.”

Maya wrote something on a pad and turned it toward me.

WHO IS THEY?

I asked.

Ryan’s breathing changed.

“I have to go.”

“Ryan.”

“Don’t touch the Breckenridge property.”

The call ended.

Maya immediately contacted the investigator assigned to the fraud report.

I stared at Ryan through the camera.

He walked away from the building without looking back.

Then my phone received an email.

No sender name.

No message.

Only one attachment.

A photograph.

Grant stood inside the unfinished Breckenridge chalet beside two men I had never seen.

On the wall behind them was a whiteboard.

Three lines were visible.

BENNETT CREDIT.
