"If treatment had been delayed," the doctor said quietly, "both mother and baby could have died."
Ryan's attorney argued stress.

Ryan's voice filled the courtroom.
"If your father finds out, nobody will believe you. They'll think you're crazy."
Another recording followed.
Linda laughed.
"A pregnant woman always has an excuse for bruises."

James never looked at Ryan.

Ryan received twelve years in state prison.
Linda received three years for obstruction, evidence tampering, and witness coercion.
Neither looked at Emily as they were led away.
Outside the courthouse, reporters crowded around Colonel Bennett.
"Colonel, do you have a statement?"
He answered with only one sentence.
"No rank has ever made me prouder than being her father."
