Chapter 15 - The Empire Starts Falling

Monday arrived.
The day I was supposed to die.
Instead of driving Interstate 85, I sat beside Emily in a secure federal building.
At 8:05 a.m., agents arrested Captain Reeves.
At 8:22, Judge Calvin Mercer was taken into custody leaving his home.
At 8:47, Harrison Pike’s law office was searched.
At 9:10, federal investigators entered Wynn Media headquarters.
Employees watched as boxes of records were carried outside.
Charles Wynn remained missing.
Then at 10:30, Senator Robert Vale walked onto the steps of the federal courthouse surrounded by attorneys.
He had agreed to surrender.
Cameras filled the street.
Vale smiled as if attending a fundraiser.
He called the investigation a political attack.
He called the evidence fabricated.
He called witnesses disgruntled criminals looking for favorable treatment.
Then a reporter shouted.
“Senator, did you authorize a payment connected to an accident targeting Colonel Victoria Hart?”
Vale stopped smiling.
Only for a second.
But America saw it.
That afternoon, federal prosecutors announced a sweeping public-corruption case.
They did not disclose every allegation.
But they confirmed investigations into bribery, obstruction, witness intimidation, conspiracy, and attempted interference with federal contracting.
The story went national.
Suddenly everyone who had ignored Emily wanted to interview her.
She refused most requests.
“I don’t want to become famous for surviving my husband.”
Instead, she asked one reporter to do something else.
“Tell Sarah Bell’s story.”
The next evening, Sarah’s photograph appeared across television networks.
Other victims came forward.
Former employees called investigators.
Accountants produced invoices.
Drivers remembered strange trips.
Security guards described people entering buildings after midnight.
One lie had required another.
Then another.
Then hundreds.
Once people stopped protecting the first lie, the entire structure began collapsing.
Margaret negotiated a plea agreement.
She would face prison.
But in exchange for cooperation, prosecutors agreed to recommend a reduced sentence.
Brandon was arrested in Virginia after using a false identification at a motel.
He refused to cooperate.
Ethan remained hospitalized under guard.
His attorney requested a separate negotiation.
Emily did not care.
“What happens to him is between him and the law.”
I looked at her.
“And you?”
“I’m done making my life about what happens to Ethan.”
That was the strongest thing I had heard her say.
The bruises on her face were fading.
The fear in her eyes wasn’t gone.
But it no longer controlled every movement.
Then Dana received a call.
Search teams investigating one of Captain Reeves’s former properties had found human remains near an abandoned hunting cabin.
Identification would take time.
Nora Bell was asked to provide DNA.
Three days later, the result came back.
Sarah Bell had been found.
Nora cried when she heard.
Not because the news was good.
It wasn’t.
But uncertainty had finally ended.
Sarah had not abandoned her.
She had not forgotten her family.
She had tried to expose people who believed money could erase her.
Emily attended the memorial.
She stood beside Nora.
Hundreds came.
Near the end, Nora hugged her.
“My sister would have liked you.”
Emily began crying.
“I wish I had known her.”
Nora looked at her.
“You did something she wanted to do.”
“What?”
“You got the evidence out.”
Emily looked toward Sarah’s photograph.
Then she whispered.
“We both did.”
That night, I thought the worst might finally be behind us.
Then Dana called.
Charles Wynn’s private jet had returned to the United States.
But Wynn was not aboard.
There was only one passenger.
A man using a false passport.
When agents searched his luggage, they found photographs of Emily.
