Chapter 11 - What Claire Took With Her

Claire did not go home that night.

She took Ava and Mason to Daniel’s house.

Ryan called her nineteen times.

She answered none of them.

Lorraine called me instead.

“You’ve poisoned my daughter-in-law against her husband.”

I was sitting on Daniel’s back porch when the call came.

Claire was inside helping Mason brush his teeth.

“Ryan lied to her.”

“Every businessman has debt.”

“Does every businessman forge his mother-in-law’s signature?”

“You have no proof he forged anything.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about.”

Lorraine’s voice sharpened.

“This family was fine until you rented that house.”

That sentence told me more than she intended.

Not until Ryan filed false documents.

Not until Claire discovered the debt.

Not until my signature appeared where it should not have.

The problem, in Lorraine’s mind, began when I stopped cooperating.

“Goodnight, Lorraine.”

“Do not hang up on me.”

I did.

Inside, Claire sat at Daniel’s kitchen table.

She looked hollow.

“I don’t know what to tell the kids.”

“The truth they need is simple.”

“What truth?”

“That Mom and Dad are having adult problems and both love them.”

She nodded.

Then she whispered, “Did you ever hate Dad?”

I knew she meant Thomas.

“Once or twice before breakfast.”

Claire almost smiled.

“But did you ever stop trusting him?”

That answer took longer.

“No.”

She stared at her hands.

“I think I stopped trusting Ryan months ago.”

I said nothing.

“He kept getting angry about money.”

She continued.

“He started checking what things were worth.”

“My jewelry.”

I looked at her.

“He asked how much your jewelry was worth?”

“He said we needed updated estate information.”

My skin went cold.

“What else?”

She hesitated.

“Your Atlanta house.”

“What about it?”

“He asked whether the mortgage was paid off.”

“It has been paid off for nine years.”

“I told him.”

Daniel had walked into the room.

He heard that.

His expression hardened.

“Claire, what else did he ask?”

She began listing things.

My retirement accounts.

Thomas’s life insurance.

Whether Daniel was included equally in my will.

Whether I had long-term-care insurance.

Whether I planned to sell the lake house if my health changed.

One by one, questions that had once sounded conversational became pieces of a map.

Ryan had been inventorying my life.

Claire covered her mouth.

“Oh my God.”

Daniel sat beside her.

“Did he ask where Mom keeps documents?”

Claire nodded.

“The gray cabinet.”

My heart stopped.

I drove home with Daniel immediately.

Nothing looked disturbed.

The cabinet was locked.

I opened it.

Insurance documents.

Tax returns.

Thomas’s estate file.

My will.

Then I saw the empty slot.

A blue folder was missing.

I knew exactly what had been inside.

Copies of my passport.

Birth certificate.

Social Security card.

And the original deed to the lake house.

I looked at Daniel.

“That folder was here.”

“Are you sure?”

“I’m a nurse.”

My voice shook.

“I labeled my children’s baby teeth.”

“Yes, I’m sure.”

Daniel called Judith.

Judith told us not to touch anything else.

Twenty minutes later, Claire called.

She sounded terrified.

“Mom.”

“What?”

“I know where the blue folder is.”

My knees weakened.

“Where?”

“At my house.”

“How do you know?”

“Because Ryan told me once it contained documents we might need if something happened to you.”

I closed my eyes.

“Claire, when did he take it?”

Her answer came in a whisper.

May you like

“Before he ever asked you to transfer the lake house.”
