Chapter 3: The Family Turns

The first person to speak was not Daniel.

It was Aunt Margaret, Richard’s younger sister.

“She’s right,” Margaret said.

Richard turned sharply.

“Stay out of this.”

But Margaret stood.

“No. I stayed out of it for thirty years. That’s why you became this cruel.”

The room shifted.

One by one, faces that had hidden behind silence began to change.

Claire looked around, stunned.

Margaret pointed at Richard.

“You did the same thing to Daniel’s mother. You called her weak. You controlled her money. You made everyone afraid of crossing you.”

Richard’s face darkened.

“She was my wife.”

“She was your prisoner,” Margaret said.

Daniel’s hands trembled at his sides.

Claire saw something break in him.

A memory.

A truth he had spent his whole life avoiding.

Richard pointed at Lily.

“That child is not Whitmore blood!”

Daniel suddenly stepped forward.

“She’s my daughter.”

The room fell silent again.

Claire turned to him.

For the first time that night, Daniel looked at Lily instead of his father.

“She is my daughter,” he repeated, louder. “And I should have said that years ago.”

Richard laughed cruelly.

“You’ll lose everything.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“No,” he said. “I already did.”

His voice cracked.

“I lost my wife’s trust. I let my daughter feel unwanted in her own family.”

Lily peeked up from Claire’s shoulder.

Daniel knelt slowly, keeping distance so he wouldn’t scare her.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he whispered. “Grandpa was wrong. I was wrong too.”

Lily’s lip trembled.

“You didn’t help me.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Those four words destroyed him.

“No,” he said. “I didn’t.”

Claire held Lily closer.

Richard grabbed his wine glass, but his hand shook so badly that it slipped.

Red wine spilled across the white tablecloth like blood.

Then the doorbell rang.

Everyone turned.

Two officers stood outside.

Behind them was Claire’s attorney.

Richard’s empire had finally come to dinner.
