Chapter 2 — The Lawsuit No One Knew Was Coming

The words settled over the dining room like smoke.

"You've been served."

No one reached for the legal portfolio.

No one even breathed.

Only the soft drip of red wine falling from the edge of the overturned glass broke the silence.

Richard Harrison—patriarch of the Harrison family for nearly forty years—stared at the thick envelope as though it might explode.

"You've lost your mind," he finally muttered.

His daughter-in-law didn't blink.

"My attorney says the same thing about anyone who bullies a four-year-old."

Emma tightened her arms around little Lily, whose tiny face was still buried against her shoulder.

Lily's quiet sobs had slowed into shaky breaths.

"It's okay," Emma whispered into her daughter's hair.

"I'll never let anyone hurt you again."

Richard slammed his hand against the table.

"You dare threaten this family?"

Emma calmly slid the first document across the polished wood.

"Not threaten."

"Sue."

His wife Margaret leaned forward.

"What lawsuit?"

Emma's voice remained perfectly level.

"For emotional abuse."

"For child endangerment."

"For defamation."

"And for illegally attempting to remove my daughter from property that legally belongs to her."

Richard laughed.

Actually laughed.

"Belongs to her?"

"This house belongs to me."

Emma slowly produced another folder.

"No."

"It belongs to Harrison Family Trust."

"And according to the trust agreement signed twelve years ago..."

She looked directly into his eyes.

"...your grandchildren inherit equal ownership."

Richard's confident smile disappeared.

Because there was only one person who had ever seen that trust.

His late son.

Emma's husband.

Who had died three years earlier.

"You don't have that document."

Emma simply turned another page.

His original signature stared back at him.
