Chapter 19 - The First Family Dinner I Did Not Pay For

Six months later, Mom invited everyone to dinner.

At a restaurant.

Not her house.

Not mine.

A restaurant.

The first thing I asked was.

“Who’s paying?”

Mom sighed.

Then laughed.

“Everyone pays for themselves.”

Progress.

Julian arrived early.

He was working for a commercial property company.

Entry-level sales.

No title.

No luxury image.

He had sold the Mercedes.

His social media account was gone.

He and Chloe never reconciled.

That hurt him more than the legal consequences.

I think that was appropriate.

Chloe deserved a life not built on financial fiction.

Dad ordered one beer.

Mom complained about the menu prices.

Aunt Caroline was not invited.

I did not mind.

Halfway through dinner, Mom looked at me.

“How is the new job?”

“Good.”

“Busy?”

“Very.”

“Are you still thinking about buying a house?”

I looked at her.

“How do you know that?”

Dad smiled.

“I told her.”

Mom immediately added.

“Not that we’re moving in.”

Everyone laughed.

Even Julian.

A year earlier, that joke might have made me tense.

Now it felt different.

Because boundaries had been spoken.

Repeated.

Tested.

Survived.

I had found a house.

Three bedrooms.

Large office.

Backyard.

Not because I needed every room.

Because I wanted them.

When Mom first saw the listing, she said.

“That’s a lot of space for one person.”

Then she caught herself.

And added.

“But it’s your space.”

That correction mattered.

At dinner, Julian raised his glass.

“To Michael.”

I gave him a suspicious look.

“No speeches.”

“Short one.”

He looked around the table.

“I spent years thinking Michael had an easy life because he had money.”

“I never noticed why he had money.”

“He worked.”

“He saved.”

“He said no to things I said yes to.”

“And then I treated those choices like they existed for me.”

Nobody spoke.

Julian looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I nodded.

“Thank you.”

He did not ask for forgiveness.

That helped.

When the check arrived, four separate cards went down.

May you like

Mine paid only for mine.

It may have been the most peaceful dinner my family ever had.
