Chapter 5: The Trial Begins

Six months later, the federal courthouse in Manhattan overflowed with reporters, television crews, and spectators hoping to witness the downfall of one of America's most admired couples.

Nathan Harrington entered through the east entrance wearing a dark navy suit, his expression unreadable. Behind him walked Ethan, Emma, and little Sophie, accompanied by child psychologists and federal victim advocates. None of the children looked toward the cameras. They had spent too many months learning that public smiles often hid private nightmares.

Victoria arrived moments later in handcuffs.

Her designer wardrobe had been replaced by a plain gray jail uniform. Her once-perfect posture had collapsed beneath months of criminal investigations, psychiatric evaluations, and endless headlines calling her "The Basement Mother."

Inside Courtroom 14A, the prosecutor wasted no time.

The lights dimmed.

The first security video appeared on the courtroom screen.

Victoria dragging Emma down the basement stairs.

The room fell silent.

Jurors stared without blinking.

Another clip followed.

Victoria locking the steel door while Ethan begged through tears.

"Mama... we'll be good..."

She walked away without answering.

The prosecutor paused the video.

"No child should ever believe love must be earned through fear."

Nathan lowered his eyes.

He had watched every second dozens of times.

It never became easier.

Victoria's defense attorney attempted to argue stress, depression, and emotional exhaustion.

Then Nathan's surveillance engineer took the witness stand.

"There were no gaps in the recordings," he testified calmly.

"The abuse occurred consistently for three hundred and thirty-two consecutive days."

Victoria finally broke.

She buried her face in her hands as the jury continued watching.
