Chapter 9 - THE HEARING WITHOUT ELENA

Max’s case went before a juvenile judge from another district.

I did not attend.

Sophie chose not to attend.

Her victim-impact statement was read privately.

She wrote it in blue ink because it matched her cast.

Max, you broke my arm.

You hurt Noah.

You left me on the stairs.

I still remember being your little sister when our parents were married.

I remember you crying because you lost your red truck.

I helped you find it.

I don’t know when you decided hurting people made you powerful.

It doesn’t.

It only makes people afraid to be near you.

I hope you tell the truth.

I hope you become better.

But I do not have to wait beside you while you do.

The court ordered Max into a secure therapeutic program.

He would receive education, trauma counseling, and behavioral treatment.

His release would depend on progress.

The judge refused Richard’s former attorney’s request to place him with wealthy family friends.

“Privilege has already prevented consequences for too long,” she said.

Richard faced adult charges.

Aggravated child endangerment.

Evidence tampering.

Conspiracy.

Kidnapping.

Fraud.

Witness intimidation.

Chief Stone faced federal corruption charges.

Principal Whitmore pleaded guilty.

Dr. Price disappeared before his arrest warrant was served.

His car was found at the airport.

Passenger records showed no flight under his name.

Mara believed Richard had helped him prepare an escape.

Then a package arrived at my courthouse chambers.

Judicial security intercepted it.

Inside was a child’s blue hair ribbon.

Sophie had worn one on the day she fell.

A note accompanied it.

THE DOCTOR KNOWS WHAT REALLY HAPPENED AT THE HOSPITAL.

The package contained no fingerprints.

Security footage showed a courier wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Mara examined the ribbon.

“Was this missing?”

“I thought the hospital removed it.”

Sophie remembered a man entering the examination room before I arrived.

He wore a white coat.

He touched her injured arm.

She cried.

He told the nurse she was confused from the concussion.

The description matched Dr. Price.

The hospital had no record of his visit.

Mara searched the emergency-room footage.

A camera showed Price entering through a staff door.

He stayed six minutes.

When he left, he carried a small blood tube.

Sophie’s blood.

The false psychiatric facility had not only planned to discredit her.

Price needed a biological sample.

“Why?” I asked.

Mara searched the Sterling Foundation’s medical records.

The answer emerged from an insurance file.

Richard had created a trust twelve years earlier.

It benefited his first biological child.

Max was publicly described as his only biological son.

The trust held shares in Sterling Development worth nearly eighty million dollars.

Sophie’s hospital blood test showed something none of us expected.

Richard was her biological father.

My former boyfriend, Daniel Ward, had been listed on her birth certificate.

Daniel died before Sophie was born.

I believed she was his child.

The dates had always been close.

Richard knew the truth.

He married me after her birth.

He raised Sophie until our divorce.

Then he abandoned her because acknowledging paternity would divide Max’s inheritance.

Dr. Price had conducted a secret test years earlier.

The hospital blood sample could prove it again.

Richard needed it destroyed or altered.

The bullying had begun after Sophie asked a family-history question for a school assignment.

Max mentioned that their ears looked alike.

Richard panicked.

This was no longer only revenge against me.

Sophie’s existence threatened the fortune Richard promised Vivian and Max.

I sat inside Mara’s office holding the laboratory report.

Every memory changed shape.

Richard’s sudden interest after Sophie’s birth.

His insistence that Daniel remain on the birth certificate.

His refusal to adopt her legally.

The custody report that removed Max from me.

He had arranged his family as carefully as his companies.

Sophie was loved when she was useful.

Erased when she became expensive.

Mara looked at me.

“Do you want to tell her?”

“She has a right to know.”

“She is recovering from trauma.”

“She still has a right to know.”

That night, I sat beside Sophie’s bed.

I told her Daniel would always be the father whose photograph we kept.

Then I told her the biological truth.

She listened quietly.

“So Richard is my dad?”

“Biologically.”

“Did he know?”

“Yes.”

Her face changed.

“He let Max hurt me.”

I took her hand.

“Yes.”

She did not cry.

That frightened me more.

“He called me a failure.”

“I remember.”

“He knew I was his daughter.”

“Yes.”

Sophie looked toward the window.

Then she whispered, “I don’t want his money.”

May you like

“This is not about money.”

“It is to him.”
