CHAPTER 2 THE SECRET BEHIND THE HOUSEKEEPER

The silence inside Whitmore House became unbearable.

Noah was still crying in Grace's arms.

Henry slowly walked across the ballroom.

Every guest watched.

Every whisper stopped.

Vivian released Noah's arm, suddenly aware that hundreds of eyes were judging her.

"Henry," she said carefully, forcing a smile. "He's just confused."

But Henry wasn't looking at her.

His eyes remained fixed on Grace.

"Look at me," he said quietly.

Grace lowered her gaze.

"Grace."

Reluctantly, she looked up.

Henry felt something twist inside his chest.

For years, he had seen this woman every day.

She prepared Noah's meals.

Read him bedtime stories.

Stayed awake when he was sick.

Comforted him after nightmares.

Yet somehow he had never truly looked at her.

Not until now.

"Why does my son call you Mommy?"

The question echoed through the ballroom.

Grace's face turned pale.

Before she could answer, Vivian stepped forward.

"Because children get attached to caretakers."

But Noah shook his head violently.

"No!"

Tears streamed down his cheeks.

"She's Mommy!"

The crowd gasped again.

Henry knelt beside his son.

"Noah."

The little boy grabbed his father's sleeve.

"Daddy, don't let her go."

Henry frowned.

"Who?"

Noah pointed at Grace.

"Mommy."

The child was trembling.

As if he were afraid someone would take her away.

Then an elderly woman stepped out from the crowd.

Mrs. Eleanor Whitmore.

Henry's grandmother.

The matriarch of the family.

At eighty years old, almost nothing escaped her attention.

She stared at Grace.

Then suddenly her eyes widened.

"My God..."

Everyone turned toward her.

Eleanor slowly approached Grace.

Her hands trembled.

Then she reached for a small birthmark behind Grace's left ear.

A tiny crescent-shaped mark.

Eleanor's face went white.

"No..."

Henry stood abruptly.

"What is it?"

Eleanor looked at him.

Then at Grace.

Then back at Henry.

And finally whispered the words that shattered the room.

"She looks exactly like Isabella."

Henry froze.

His mother.

The woman who died giving birth to him.

The same dark eyes.

The same smile.

The same birthmark.

The same face.

Vivian suddenly looked terrified.

Because she knew something no one else knew.

And she realized the truth was about to come out.

Grace slowly closed her eyes.

She had spent twenty-six years running from this moment.

But she could no longer hide.

"My mother worked here," she whispered.

The room fell silent.

"Her name was Maria Ellis."

Eleanor gasped.

Maria.

The maid who vanished twenty-six years ago.

The maid who disappeared while pregnant.

The maid the family was ordered never to mention again.

Henry's heartbeat thundered.

Because one impossible thought had entered his mind.

And it refused to leave.

"What are you saying?" he asked.

Grace looked directly at him.

Then at the entire Whitmore family.

And finally revealed the truth.

"I am Richard Whitmore's daughter."

The ballroom exploded into chaos.

Because Richard Whitmore was Henry's father.

Which meant Grace wasn't a housekeeper.

May you like

She was a Whitmore.

And Henry's half-sister.
