CHAPTER 2 – The Cage Was Only the Beginning

The metal latch snapped open with one sharp pull.

Captain Emily Carter dropped to one knee in front of the cage.

"Mom..."

Helen Carter tried to smile, but her lips trembled too hard.

Emily gently wrapped her military jacket around her mother's frail shoulders before helping her out.

She weighed almost nothing.

That terrified Emily more than the cage itself.

"What did they do to you?"

Helen shook her head.

"It's over now."

"No."

Emily looked up.

"It just started."

Across the courtyard, Vanessa Carter finally found her voice.

"This is ridiculous! She wanted to be outside! She's becoming confused in her old age."

Emily slowly stood.

Every movement was calm.

Every step was controlled.

The kind of control soldiers learned before walking into combat.

"You locked my mother in a dog cage."

"It was for her own safety."

Emily glanced at the rusted food bowl sitting beside the cage.

It still contained stale bread floating in dirty water.

"For her safety?"

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"You've been gone for eighteen months. You don't know what she's like now."

"I know exactly what I'm looking at."

The front door suddenly opened.

David Carter walked outside, adjusting his expensive suit.

Emily's older brother.

The man who had promised before she deployed:

"Don't worry. Mom will never be alone."

He stopped walking the moment he saw the cage.

Then his eyes landed on Emily.

"...You're home."

"I am."

His face turned pale.

Vanessa immediately ran toward him.

"David, thank God! She's overreacting! Your mother keeps wandering around. The cage was temporary."

Emily looked directly at her brother.

"Tell me she's lying."

David remained silent.

"David."

Another silence.

Helen quietly lowered her eyes.

Emily understood everything.

He knew.

He had always known.

Something inside her broke.

"You watched this happen."

David rubbed his forehead.

"You don't understand. Vanessa has been under a lot of stress."

Emily laughed once.

A cold, empty laugh.

"My mother slept in a cage."

"Don't make this worse."

"Worse?"

Emily slowly removed the American flag patch from her deployment bag.

"I spent eighteen months protecting strangers."

She looked at him.

"And you couldn't protect your own mother."

The security gate buzzed.

A black SUV entered the estate.

Then another.

Then a third.

Military police stepped out.

Vanessa's confidence disappeared.

"What... what are they doing here?"

May you like

Emily answered without looking away.

"I called them from the airport."
