CHAPTER 3 – Every Lie Has a Camera

The military police weren't there to arrest Vanessa.
Not yet.
They were witnesses.
Emily had learned long ago that anger won battles.
Evidence won wars.
She walked into the house.
Everything looked luxurious.
Italian marble.
Crystal chandeliers.
Fresh flowers.
Perfect family photographs.
Until she noticed one frame missing from the hallway.
A faded picture of their late father.
She frowned.
"Where's Dad's photo?"
Helen whispered,
"Vanessa said old pictures made the house look poor."
Emily's jaw tightened.
Inside the study, she opened the home's security cabinet.
Empty.
"The recorder's gone," David said quickly.
"It broke months ago."
Emily smiled.
"No."
She pulled a small device from her backpack.
Military cyber intelligence.
Before returning home, she had remotely contacted the estate's security company.
Most homeowners never realized modern systems automatically backed up recordings to encrypted cloud storage.
Emily plugged in the device.
Within seconds...
Video files appeared.
Vanessa's breathing became uneven.
"No..."
Emily pressed PLAY.
The courtyard filled the television screen.
Vanessa dragging Helen by the arm.
Shoving her toward the cage.
Locking the door.
Laughing.
Then taking selfies with friends beside the cage while Helen begged quietly for water.
David stared at the screen.
His face drained of color.
"I... I never saw this."
Emily skipped forward.
More footage.
Vanessa ordering the servants not to feed Helen until evening.
Threatening to fire anyone who helped.
Selling Helen's jewelry.
Forging Helen's signature on financial papers.
Then came the final clip.
David leaving for work.
Vanessa waited until his car disappeared.
Then she smiled...
...and slapped Helen across the face.
The room fell completely silent.
Vanessa collapsed into a chair.
"I can explain..."
"No," David whispered.
"You can't."
