Chapter 20 - ONE YEAR AFTER THE WEDDING
Senator Richard Mercer was convicted on charges of conspiracy, attempted murder, financial fraud, evidence tampering, and corruption.
Dr. Reeves accepted a plea agreement and testified against more than a dozen officials inside Mercer’s network.
The security chief received twenty-eight years in federal prison.
The stolen foundation money was recovered.
Emma’s name was cleared.
Serena entered witness protection after testifying before a closed federal hearing.
Thomas Bennett returned to public life long enough to provide evidence against every person involved in the laundering operation.
Then he disappeared again.
This time, Margaret went with him.
She left Daniel a letter explaining that forgiveness would require time, distance, and complete honesty.
Daniel understood.
He had learned that love without honesty was only another form of captivity.
Olivia pleaded guilty.
Her cooperation reduced her sentence, but it did not erase what she had done.
Daniel attended the final hearing.
She wore a plain navy uniform instead of a pearl-covered wedding gown.
When the judge asked whether she understood the consequences of her plea, Olivia looked toward Daniel.
“Yes, Your Honor.”
Her voice remained steady.
“For the first time, I understand them completely.”
The marriage was annulled.
The Blackwood Estate reopened as a recovery center for women escaping coercive relationships and financial abuse.
Emma became its director.
Caleb insisted that the garden needed a tree house.
Daniel built it himself.
One year after the wedding, he stood in the same chapel where Olivia had threatened to send his sister to prison.
The white roses were gone.
Morning light moved across the empty seats.
Noah entered carrying a small package.
“This came for you.”
There was no return address.
Inside was a silver voice recorder.
Daniel pressed play.
Olivia’s voice filled the chapel.
“I don’t know whether you will ever hear this.”
She sounded younger.
The recording had been made before the wedding.
“Richard told me I had to choose between you and Serena.”
Daniel sat in the front row.
“I told myself I was protecting her.”
Olivia paused.
“But the truth is that I was also afraid to lose the power he promised me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I loved you.”
Her voice trembled.
“That was real.”
“But I loved revenge more.”
The recording ended.
Beneath the device was a photograph Daniel had never seen.
It showed Olivia, Serena, and Richard standing outside an isolated house.
A fourth person had been partially cut from the picture.
Only one hand and part of a dark coat remained visible.
On the back, Olivia had written a message.
Richard was never the highest person in the organization.
Daniel turned the photograph toward the light.
A ring was visible on the stranger’s hand.
It carried the official seal of the Bennett Foundation.
Noah stared at it.
“Who had that ring?”
Daniel thought of the foundation’s original board.
Only five people had received that seal.
His father had owned one.
His mother had owned another.
Three others had disappeared from public life years ago.
Daniel’s phone rang.
The number was hidden.
He answered.
A woman spoke.
“You exposed Richard Mercer.”
Daniel looked at the photograph.
“Who is this?”
“You should be asking where your father is.”
Daniel stood.
“What did you do to him?”
The woman laughed softly.
“Thomas Bennett did not disappear with your mother.”
Daniel’s grip tightened around the phone.
“He was taken.”
“By whom?”
The chapel doors slammed shut behind him.
The lights went dark.
The woman whispered one final sentence.
