CHAPTER 5 Six Months Later

The courtroom was full.
Linda sat at the defense table wearing an orange jail uniform.
She no longer looked powerful.
The jury watched as prosecutors played Emily's recording.
Again.
And again.
Every lie unraveled.
The forged signatures.
The fake medical reports.
The illegal arrangement with an adoption broker.
The attempt to declare me mentally incompetent immediately after childbirth.
Even the doctor testified.
"I should have verified every document myself. I failed my patient."
His medical license was suspended.
Linda received a lengthy prison sentence.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded us.
I ignored every microphone.
Emily held one hand.
My baby boy slept peacefully in the stroller.
A reporter asked,
"What saved your son?"
I smiled through grateful tears.
"My daughter."
That night, after putting the baby to sleep, Emily climbed into bed beside me.
"Mom?"
"Yes?"
"Were you scared under the bed?"
I laughed softly.
"I've never been more scared."
She rested her head on my shoulder.
"I was scared too."
I kissed her forehead.
"But you were still brave."
She smiled.
"You trusted me."
"I always will."
Outside, the rain finally stopped.
Inside our home, peace had finally returned.
Sometimes heroes aren't police officers.
Sometimes they aren't lawyers.
Sometimes...
May you like
They're just eight-year-old little girls who refuse to let anyone steal their family.
