CHAPTER 1: UNDER THE BED

Linda’s shoes stopped beside the hospital bed.

From beneath it, I could see only the hem of her cream coat and the polished black shoes of the doctor standing next to her.

My body screamed in pain. Every muscle begged me to move, to cry, to call for help.

But I stayed silent.

Emily stood near the window, small and trembling, pretending to look at the newborn bassinet.

“Where is she?” Linda asked.

The doctor stepped closer to the bed.

“She was here five minutes ago.”

Linda’s voice dropped.

“She couldn’t have gone far. She just gave birth.”

My heart hammered so loudly I was sure they could hear it.

Then the doctor pulled back the curtain.

Emily turned.

“She went to the bathroom,” my daughter said.

Her voice shook, but she didn’t break.

Linda looked at her slowly.

For the first time, I heard something dangerous in my mother-in-law’s silence.

“Emily,” Linda said sweetly, “come here.”

Emily didn’t move.

Linda stepped toward her.

“You heard something you shouldn’t have, didn’t you?”

My little girl’s eyes filled with tears.

The doctor opened the clipboard in his hand.

“There’s no time,” he muttered. “The transfer team is already downstairs.”

Transfer team?

My blood turned cold.

Linda sighed.

“She signed away custody. She signed the psychiatric hold. She signed everything.”

I nearly gasped.

I had signed nothing.

The doctor answered quietly, “The husband’s signature was enough to begin the process.”

My husband.

Mark.

The room tilted around me.

Then the door opened again.

A nurse stepped in.

“Dr. Keller? Security is asking why Mrs. Carter’s discharge request was filed under emergency psychiatric review.”

Silence.

Linda turned sharply.

The nurse’s voice grew colder.

“Especially since Mrs. Carter is listed as conscious, stable, and breastfeeding.”

For one breath, nobody moved.

Then Emily looked straight at the nurse and whispered:

“My mom is under the bed.”
