Chapter 3: The Truth No One Expected

Hospital alarms echoed through the maternity floor.

Linda's perfect composure disappeared.

"What is happening?" she demanded.

A new voice answered from the hallway.

"I'd like to know the same thing."

The hospital director stepped inside.

Behind him came hospital security.

Behind them...

My husband.

Daniel.

His face was ghost white.

He stared at the empty hospital bed.

Then at Linda.

"What did you do?"

Linda laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

The director didn't respond.

Instead, he held up a tablet.

Security footage.

Not only today's conversation.

Months of recordings.

A nurse had secretly reported unusual activity after noticing Linda meeting repeatedly with the same doctor after visiting hours.

The hospital's internal investigation had already begun before I arrived to give birth.

Today's conversation had completed the case.

The doctor collapsed into a chair.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

"I only changed documents at first... then she threatened to expose my gambling debts."

Daniel looked horrified.

"Mom..."

Linda's expression changed.

No fear.

Only anger.

"You ungrateful boy."

She pointed at him.

"I built your future."

"No," Daniel replied.

"You tried to steal mine."

Then another voice spoke.

"I think she's hiding something else."

Everyone turned.

Emily.

Still clutching the small backpack she'd brought from home.

She reached inside.

"I found these in Grandma's office."

She handed the director a stack of old adoption files.

Dozens.

Children.

Different mothers.

Different hospitals.

The room fell completely silent.

May you like

Linda hadn't planned one crime.

She had built an entire business.
