Chapter 6 - THE ASSISTANT WHO PLANTED THE BRACELET
Nolan Price disappeared before police could arrest him.
His apartment was empty.
His passport remained in a desk drawer.
A train camera captured him entering Grand Central Station with one small bag.
He never boarded a train.
Adrian believed Nolan had returned to the hotel through the connected service tunnels.
The Halcyon occupied almost an entire city block.
Old corridors linked the kitchens, loading docks, laundry rooms, and original subway access.
Someone who knew the building could remain unseen for hours.
Detective Bennett ordered a full search.
Hotel guests were moved from the restricted floors.
Leah remained with Rosa at the hospital.
Julian refused to leave the Halcyon.
He spent the night in the greenhouse reading Claire’s letters.
Some were angry.
Some were hopeful.
The final one had never been addressed.

Leah asked about her father today.
I told her he loved music and hated olives.
I did not tell her you once danced with me in the empty ballroom because the quartet had gone home and you said silence was still music if the right person stood beside you.
Perhaps that was cruel.
Perhaps I wanted one memory Eleanor could not rewrite.
Julian folded the letter.
Adrian entered the greenhouse.
“We found Nolan.”
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“He was hiding in the old laundry office.”
“Why?”
“He says Eleanor ordered him to remain until the hotel records were destroyed.”
Nolan agreed to speak in exchange for protection.
He admitted planting the pearl bracelet inside Eleanor’s coat.
That surprised everyone.
Eleanor had ordered him to place it inside Leah’s satchel.
But he changed the location at the last moment.
“Why?” Detective Bennett asked.
Nolan stared at the table.
“Because Eleanor was going to blame me if the plan failed.”
“She prepared a statement saying I acted alone.”
“So you betrayed her?”
“I protected myself.”
He had no interest in justice.
Only survival.
Still, his testimony mattered.
He described the gala plan.
Leah’s contract was approved after facial-recognition software matched an old photograph of Claire.
Eleanor hired a private investigator to confirm Leah’s identity.
She learned about the locket.
She learned Leah always carried the satchel.
She ordered Nolan to steal the locket before the gala.
He failed.
Then Eleanor changed the plan.
Publicly accuse Leah of stealing the bracelet.
Empty her bag.
Remove her through hotel security.
Recover the locket afterward.
“Why invite Julian?” Bennett asked.
“It was his foundation gala.”
“He would have attended anyway.”
Nolan shook his head.
“Mr. Mercer planned to remain in Boston.”
“Eleanor created a false emergency with a donor so he would return.”
She needed Julian present.
Not to see Leah.
To witness Leah being called a thief.
If he ever discovered the paternity later, Eleanor wanted his first memory of Leah to be criminal.
The cruelty was strategic.
Destroy the woman’s credibility before revealing her connection.
Eleanor had done the same thing to Claire.
Nolan also admitted going to Rosa’s apartment.
He struck her when she surprised him.
He took the decoy flower box.
Then he returned to the hotel through the service tunnel.
He expected Eleanor to help him leave the country.
She stopped answering.
“She sacrifices everyone,” he said.
Julian looked at him.
“You knew Rosa might die.”
“I checked her pulse.”
“That is not an answer.”
Nolan lowered his eyes.
Detective Bennett charged him with assault, burglary, conspiracy, evidence tampering, and attempted fraud.
Eleanor was arrested that evening.
She walked through the Halcyon lobby in handcuffs.
Guests watched from the balconies.
She kept her head high.
When she passed Leah, who had returned from the hospital, she stopped.
“You think a blood test makes you his daughter?”
Leah answered quietly.
