Chapter 18 - THE CRADLE BY THE LAKE

Julian finished the wooden cradle.

He did not give it to Leah.

He placed it inside the lake house beside Claire’s letters.

When Leah visited, the wood had been sanded smooth.

A small silver plate rested beneath the rail.

FOR THE CHILD I LOVED BEFORE I KNEW HER NAME.

Leah touched the inscription.

“You were not supposed to make this for me.”

“I did not.”

“I finished it because leaving it broken had become another way of waiting.”

They sat beside the lake.

Julian did not ask Leah to call him Dad.

He did not introduce her publicly without permission.

He did not send expensive gifts.

Once a week, they had dinner.

Sometimes they spoke about Claire.

Sometimes they discussed flowers, hotels, baseball, or nothing important.

Their relationship grew through ordinary details.

Julian learned Leah hated olives.

Leah learned Julian watched terrible detective programs.

He learned she became quiet when angry.

She learned he became overly formal when frightened.

One evening, Leah asked the question she had avoided.

“If Mom had contacted you when she became sick, what would you have done?”

Julian looked toward the lake.

“I would like to say I would have fixed everything.”

“I might have tried to take control.”

“I might have overwhelmed her with doctors, money, and security.”

“I hope I would have listened.”

“But I do not know.”

Leah appreciated the uncertainty.

Perfect answers belonged to people rewriting themselves as heroes.

“Do you wish she had called?”

“Every day.”

“Do you blame her?”

“No.”

“I blame the fear my family created.”

Leah nodded.

“I blamed you for a long time.”

“You were allowed.”

“I still do sometimes.”

“You are allowed that too.”

Before leaving, Leah placed the locket inside the cradle for one moment.

Claire’s photograph rested where the baby should have slept.

Then Leah returned it to her neck.

May you like

The cradle belonged to the past.

The locket still traveled with her.
