Chapter 15 - THE LOWEST NIGHT

Emily did not sleep after the meeting.

Neither did I.

At three in the morning, I found her sitting on Lily’s bedroom floor.

Lily was asleep in my sister’s guest room across town.

Emily held The Secret Garden.

Police had recovered it from Marlene’s car after the arrest.

The hollow section was empty.

The original letter was still missing.

Emily stared at the cover.

“My mother gave Lily this book.”

“I know.”

“She probably knew the hiding place because she gave it to her.”

“Maybe.”

Emily started crying.

“I feel stupid.”

“No.”

“I let her organize my pills.”

“You trusted your mother.”

“I knew what she did when I was nineteen.”

“You remembered pieces.”

“I should have protected Lily.”

I sat beside her.

“You did.”

“How?”

“You believed her.”

Emily looked at me.

“That is where protection started.”

Children do not need perfect parents.

They need adults who believe them when truth becomes inconvenient.

That night, Emily finally slept.

I did not.

I sat in the hallway and thought about everything I missed.

Marlene criticizing Emily.

Marlene insisting she handled money better.

Marlene making jokes about Lily being dramatic.

Marlene telling me not to “encourage nonsense” when Lily complained Grandma searched her drawers.

The signs looked obvious now.

They had not felt obvious then.

That distinction mattered.

Hindsight can become another kind of cruelty.

At dawn, Detective Chen called.

The original trust letter had been found.

Where?

Inside Marlene’s attorney’s office.

He immediately claimed Marlene gave him a sealed envelope as potential estate evidence before arrest.

He had not opened it.

The letter was intact.

Thomas’s handwriting.

Emily read it later.

Sweetheart,

If you are reading this, then I waited too long to tell you that you were right.

Your mother has taken money from the company.

I dismissed your concerns because believing you meant admitting I had failed to see the person beside me clearly.

That failure belongs to me, not you.

I am restoring your controlling interest.

Do not let anyone use the Silver Pines records to make decisions for you.

You were never unstable.

You were telling the truth before I was ready to hear it.

Love,

Dad.

Emily pressed the letter to her chest.

For nineteen years, part of her believed Thomas thought she was crazy.

He had not.

Not in the end.

He believed her.

Too late to repair everything.

May you like

But not too late for the truth to reach her.

That was enough to change the next morning.
