Chapter 2 – The Man Behind My Name

Victor Ashford didn't raise his voice.

He didn't have to.

The silence that followed his words settled over the penthouse like a winter storm.

Adrián lowered his hand.

Not because he wanted to.

Because instinct told him the rules had just changed.

Victor walked across the marble floor with measured confidence, his charcoal overcoat still dusted with snow from outside. Two men in dark suits remained near the entrance, saying nothing.

They weren't bodyguards.

They were witnesses.

Victor stopped beside me.

His eyes swept over my bruised cheek, my trembling hands, and finally the curve of my pregnant stomach.

For one terrible second, I saw guilt instead of anger.

"I should have found you sooner."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I didn't let you."

He nodded once.

"I know."

Behind us, Eleanor recovered first.

"I'm afraid you've misunderstood the situation."

Victor slowly turned toward her.

"No."

"I've understood it perfectly."

He removed a thick folder from beneath his arm and placed it gently on the dining table.

Inside were photographs.

Hospital reports.

Bank transfers.

Security footage.

Every piece of evidence Adrián believed no one would ever see.

My attorney stepped through the doorway behind Victor.

"So did the District Attorney."

Adrián's expression hardened.

"You've been spying on me."

"No," my lawyer answered calmly.

"You confessed."

She pressed a small remote.

Hidden speakers inside the penthouse filled the room.

Adrián's own voice echoed through every wall.

"You'll do exactly as you're told."

"You'll never leave with my son."

"Nobody will believe you."

The recording continued.

Then Eleanor's voice followed.

"Don't leave marks anyone might notice."

Her champagne glass slipped from her fingers.

Crystal exploded across the marble floor.

Victor never smiled.

"You recorded yourselves."

Adrián stared directly at me.

"You planned this."

"No."

I wiped my tears.

"I survived it."

The police arrived twelve minutes later.

Not because Victor owned them.

Because my attorney had already filed emergency requests earlier that afternoon.

The recordings simply accelerated everything.

Adrián attempted to leave.

An officer stopped him.

"You'll need to remain here, Mr. Castillo."

"This is absurd."

"It isn't."

The detective held up another warrant.

"We're also searching your offices."

For the first time...

Real fear appeared in Adrián's eyes.

Because he knew what waited there.

Shell companies.

Forged financial records.

Offshore accounts.

Insurance fraud.

The abuse against me had only been one piece of something much larger.

As officers escorted him toward the elevator, he looked back.

"You think you've won?"

Victor answered before I could.

"No."

"My daughter survived."

"Winning begins tomorrow."

That night...

I didn't sleep in a penthouse.

I slept in my childhood bedroom for the first time in nearly three years.

The walls were still painted soft blue.

My old books remained on the shelves.

Nothing had changed.

Except me.

Victor knocked quietly before entering.

He handed me a small wooden box.

"I kept these."

Inside lay every birthday card I had ever written him.

Every photograph.

Every Father's Day drawing.

May you like

"I never stopped waiting."

I finally cried the tears I had buried for two years.
